i believe it will say on your ac unit what freon it uses. and if your need to recharge your central air you will need to have a HVAC technician to perform the mantance.

the AC unit uses a refrigerant gas much like a fridge.

The gas goes to liquid state and back. absorbing and releasing heat.( the gas is not used up as it is recycled)

You typically use it to get heat off you house air and release the heat outside the house.

Those gases are bad for the ozone layer if released in the atmosphere so ozone friendly version have been developped.

So the gas just goes from a heat exchanger in your ventaliation system to the outside unit and back with a pump. There is also a fan on the outside unit to make the heat exchange from the gas to the outside air faster much like a car radiator.

the pump and fan use electricity.

You would need to add more gas if there is a leak, but you should take care of the leak first.
