Question:

What do you put on your "FOR SALE" sign/listing if the car has issues?

I'm selling my 97 Toyota Tercel that a couple months ago I had to pay about $600 to have the engine taken apart and the timing belt put back on - it'd slipped a few cogs. It did the same thing again (they said it might) and it definitely needs someone to take the engine apart and tinker with it but it most likely will just keep doing this. I do have 100K miles on it but it should have survived longer - I just wasn't very nice about getting oil changes/maintenance done on it.

I bought signs to put on my car but what do you put when it's got issues? "Handyman special"? "Timing belt issues"? Or just "Sold As Is?" I don't want to pull one over on anyone but I also think with the right person they might be able to get it going again for at least a while longer. It's a good car - 30MPG, A/C, I put about $800 worth of all-weather radials on it less than two years ago. No body damage, interior's in good shape.

What should I put and how much should I ask for it?

  1. I put.... "GET THIS THING AWAY FROM ME! JUNK! CHEAP!" It always works.

  2. Needs some TLC.

  3. go to kbb.com to get the value of it and put on the sign "call for details"

    edit:  ______

    "as is" works too!

it's a little less honest, and you may need to mark it down a bit, but if you wanna get it sold... you will

  4. your best bet is mechanical special sold as is....

and Im sorry to say it but your not really going to get anything for it since it is a 97 trcel and not worth much even if it had brand new everything and the motor is bad your still only going to get maybe $300 at most

    break down

most people looking to buy a mechanical special such as my self would pay for a 97 trecel

      $300-say you sell it for

    $1400 for a new motor

      $200 for gaskets and hoses

$200 small things like smog regestration

    $2100 after everything (Est.)

you have to understand when your selling a car that runs your paying for a car

when your buying a car that dosnt have a motor or dosnt run your buying a shell and that means alooot of work...

  5. I don't know how much you should ask for the car but...I would put "As Is" on the For Sale sign. If the person asks what is wrong then you can tell them.

When you put "as is" this means that you are not responsible for anything that goes wrong.
