Question:

What do you really think about a Candy Bar?

I'm thinking of having one at my wedding and need some help! I saw one question earlier, but it didn't quite answer mine.

Our reception hall pretty much has everything covered, we'll have cake, dessert, a sweet table, and a chocolate fountain. I know it's not needed, but I think it would make a nice touch.

Our colors are black and white, and the centerpieces at the reception will be a bright pink color. I'd like to have several different candies, black, white, and pink, but really primarily pink.

So how hard is this typically? We're looking at about 250-300 people. I've found some vases that I absolutely love, along with adorable little scoops, but have no idea how much work goes into filling everything up and making sure I have enough for each guest. I've also found some Chicago "skyline" bags for them to put the candy in.

Opinions?

  1. You can do a lot of the prep work in advance. Once you've selected the vases/containers for the candy, you can bag up enough candy to fill it, so all that needs to happen day-of is pour it in.

Keep in mind that not all of your guests will want to take candy, so have enough for everyone to fill a small bag, but not an excess (or you'll be sick of candy after your wedding!).

Also, if you have any kind of event staff (servers, catering staff, etc) it might help to have someone keep an eye on the table. If there are children at the reception, they may go a little crazy near the candy, so be prepared for spills and things like that.

It's a super cute idea, and I think if it's planned out well, it'll look great!

  2. This sounds a lot like my reception. Last minute we decided to do the candy bar and it was perfect!

Our colors were brown and white. The bar looked great! We had cute baggies and decorated the jars with candy really nice.

Everyone really really liked it. It was a huge hit.

  3. I'm biased because I'm a candy freak, but I love that idea. My fiance and I both love candy, so it was an obvious choice for us. It's also doubling as our favors (we're getting cute little personalized boxes for guests to take the candy home in).

Just made sure you buy wide enough vases or containers. My mom expressed that concern to me when I was considering using tall, slender vases for the modern look but she pointed out that once the candy was below the half-way point, guests wouldn't be able to get it out unless you had a ladle or something. Bowls will probably work best.

It's pretty inexpensive to do and I don't think it requires a lot of set-up. You're basically just putting candies in containers and making sure they're nicely displayed with little signs saying what each thing is.

However, I would rethink the chocolate fountain if you want a candy bar. That's a lot of desserts and overall, it's not necessary. I know that we had had a lot of "self-editing" to do when it came to making choices (we originally wanted to pass out more favors to everyone, but nixed it because it was too much). Think about it: a sweets table, the cake, dessert, the candy bar AND a fountain? That's overwhelming! But it's also your choice, if that's what you want :)

Happy planning. I'm in Chicago, too, by the way, but getting married  in NY.

  4. Wow, are you serving anything besides sweets? In the end, if it is what you want and you like it, go for it! Ps. I really like your wedding colors. Congrats!

  5. well you could always get those special flavored jelly beans.  they are really pretty.  try visiting one of those specialty candy shops in the mall.

  6. A girl on my roller derby league had one of these (they called it a Candy Buffet so maybe theirs was bigger?) and they had a LOT of stuff left over.  They were sending people home with the stuff.  But it was a big hit with the gals who went.

  7. have what you like, its your day and don't let anyone mess it up.

  8. i don't know details but i went to a wedding with a candy bar and it was cute :)  they had boxes that were related shapes also and it was a nice touch.  i will say that i don't know if a lot of people knew that this was their favor and to go take candy before they left.... i think the brides mom announced it over the microphone at the end so you might want to make sure someone does that too.

  9. We are having one. Our colors are also black and white and the candy bar is where we are going to have the pop of color. We're have cake and desert station also but we just thought a candy bar was so cute. It's great for guests, they really enjoy it!! It's not hard to do at all. OrientalTrading.com sells candy by the gross and they have lots of nostalgic candy that people would love to see again. M&M's have the custom m&m's for events and such that you can get in your wedding colors and have your wedding date printed on them. Also look up candy wholesalers on line. I love the idea of huge vases filled with candy. I've seen jars filled with the "rock" candy on sticks, that's always cute too. For 250-300 guests plan about 3-4 scoops for each guest's bag. Good Luck!!!

  10. Great color scheme (im doing black and white also)

well you obviously nailed that its not important to have , but if you do have one its a great touch.. talk to your venue first about it. let them know what you have in mind, they might have a section that is perfect for it or they might tell you that they dont have the room for it. so before you spend the money  chekc with them first.

Also, youll just have to bring everything needed (vases, candy, scoops, bags) to the hall prob 10 days prior to your event.  i thin if you do 5 or 6 vases with different types of candy (depending ont he size of the vase) you should be ok. this is just for them to take a little bit not fill bags up so i think ull end up having lots to take home!

you should go to that m&m site and have black white and pink m&m's personalized with your names and wedding date on them.

    good luck
