  1. get either a poolboy or a sucker " fish"

  2. Make sure you add enough chlorine...I also add the Blue Stuff to make it blue and crystal clean..

  3. Just maintain your pool on a regular basis.

Shock your pool once a week <usually best on Sunday night after a weekend of heavy use if you have kids>.

Maintain your chlorine tablets in your skimmer or chlorinator.

Add algaecide during the week a day or 2 after you have shocked your pool.

vac your pool and brush it.  Brushing it, even if it appears that there is nothing there is still healthy for your pool.  regardless of whether you have a liner or a gunite/plaster bottom pool.

You should always take a water sample in to your pool store in the spring to make sure all your chemicals are in the proper range after sitting all winter.  Balancing your water properly early in the spring, will save you money later on chemical costs..  Some people do not balance the water properly, and combat any problems they have with "just shock the pool" IF you are just shocking the pool 3-4 times a week to keep it clear, you have a problem somewhere, as well as a burning hole in your pocket where your money used to be.

Check your filter and pump.  After Vacuuming the pool, turn the pump off, clean the pump basket of any leaves or other debris, and restart, check your filter pressure.  If your pool normally runs at 18 PSI, and its now at 25, even though its still not that high, you could use a backwash..  If you have a DE filter, you could save some money on water expenses by taking the filter elements out of the filter and using a hose to clean them, this actually assures you get the cleanest possible filtration.  IF you have a Sand filter, just backwash it normally.

You should check your chlorine and PH levels with a test kit, preferably on a tues or wednesday when the pool has been sitting idle for a day or 2 or has had limited usage.  This will give you the best results.  IF you test your pool on saturday when its been used all day long by the kids, and other family members and they've been in and out of it all day, you probably will not get the best readings.  When you do test the water, use a test kit that uses the liquid drops.  The strips are nice, But i dont like them, i dont think that they are accurate, or as accurate as the liquid dropper testkits.

Proper Readings... your ideal Chlorine level should be 1.5.  If its 1.0, you might want to increase your chlorinator a notch, or if you put your chlorine tabs in the skimmer, you want to add another tab, or break one and add a half tab to get it a little boost.  IF your chlorine is running a little high, don't worry about it too much unless its getting to 3.0 high.  2.0 is still very safe, and will give you an added bonus to fight the algae and other bacterias in the water, so when it does get used on the weekends etc, it doesnt kill your chlorine level.

PH level should be 7.4-7.6.  If its low, you will need to add some Ph increaser, or if its too high you may need to add some muriatic acid.  Your test kit will have a dosage chart to help you figure this out.

Every 2 weeks, add some Clear Blue chemical, its a water clarifier.  Usually only need a few ounces.  So a whole bottle should last you a summer season.

Lastly... Make sure you are running your pool long enough, and during the day.  If your pool sits in the direct sunlight all day long, you want to run your pool during those hours.  Most pools require at a minimum of 8 hours.  I recommend running from 9am until 5pm.  If you are getting algae, you may need to increase it.  Run it until 6 pm, and increase it as needed until your algae problem goes away, But a sign of algae is not always because you run your pool too little, it could be a problem with your chemicals so check them and make sure that they are fine.

Hope this helps and is what you wanted.
