im 18 yrs old and i want to read some bboks but dont know where to start

It would help to know more about your interests.  There are the classics: See the first site below for one list with short descriptions.

My son likes some books that are a little bit less than classic, like the Stainless Steel Rat series ( James Dean meets the future type of novel, funny in places, but has some interesting observations of politics and government.  Hint:  in the first book he arranges to go to prison so he can pick up tips on how to be a good criminal, then he breaks out of prison.)

You may want to try out books until you find an author you like, then get more books by that author.  Try Mark Twain, Isaac Asimov,   Chaim Potok, Jules Verne, H.G.Wells etc.

Try going to the library and choose a section that sounds interesting, poetry, science fiction, non fiction etc.  Then pull a bunch of books and start looking through them.  Check out the ones you want.  Or go to auctions or garage sales where you might be able to get an entire box of books for $2.00.  If you are interetsed in a certain them or subject, you can also enter the topic and the computer at the library will generate a list of novels with that theme( for example, survival, holocaust, outer space,roman history  etc.)

Just a suggestion, as you read the books, keep a running commentary on the table section of a word processing program.  Put date in first column, author in second column, Title  and summary in third column, a brief indication of how you liked it in the last column.  That way you will be able to sort by any of these categories later on.
