I will be sitting GAMSAT in 3 years time. I can't wait to get into MED school and become a doctor. Just wondering what you study in MED school. I know its a lame question but none of the universities i will be applying to really say much.

  1. I'm in the US, but I think programs are pretty similar elsewhere overall.  And it's not a lame question; I felt like I didn't really know what to expect at just about every point in the whole process.  ;-)

The first two years of medical school are mostly classroom work (the preclinical years).  Depending on how your course is structured, you may be taking different classes, or a lot of schools have gone to system-based learning (instead of taking a class in anatomy, one in physiology, one in embryology, etc., you take a course that covers all of that for the Cardiovascular system, then one that covers it all for GI, and so on).  As a general rule, the first year is dedicated to learning how all these things work normally, and in second year you go over them all again from the perspective of what can go wrong (the pathology).

The final two years are the clinical years where you will be on rotations in different specialties.  The idea is to try different things out so that you get an idea of what kind of residency you want to apply for.  You don't have the same responsibility yet that you will as a resident, but you do usually carry your own patients (with a lot of oversight from senior residents and the attending physician), learn to write notes, find out how the wards operate, get an idea about basic treatment and how to talk to patients and perform examinations and basic procedures.  As you get into fourth year and are more experienced, your responsibilities can become greater.

As I said, this is how it works in the US.  YMMV a bit.

    Good luck!
