I was fired from an accounting position I held after being recently promoted within the company for what I consider ridiculous reasons. The CFO was also taken by surprise and hadn't ok'd the decision but ,it had already been made and was too late. Anyway. there had been an 8 month gap in employment.

what do you say in that instance if you are looking for another job. I am currently employed, just need advice.

  1. Well, you have to be honest about the firing and the employment gap, because the potential employer will find out about it anyway.

The best thing to do is to address it up front and give the FACTS without your OPINIONS about why you were fired.  If the facts don't support firing you, it will be very clear to your new potential boss, and if you give only the facts, those will be backed up when he/she calls for references.

If you dilute the issue by giving your personal opinions or saying that you were fired for a dumb reason or that the person who fired you hated you, etc..., it will come off like immature high-school drama.

Anyway, that's my two cents.  Best wishes to you.

  2. It will be best to disclose all your past job related conditions and circumstance under which you had to leave or discharged.

As references when investigated and found not in consonance with your reportings will bring you to a serious situation including termination.

Be frank with your prospective Employers, as you wil have to convince them rather than conceal facts as they stand.

  3. Unless they ask don't say anything, just put your last employement on your resume, and if they ask explain the situation of what happened.

  4. Be honest about the reasons. But unless they ask you, you shouldnt say anything. Most employers will ask the reason why you are not working with your previous employers, just let them know that you were not the right fit for the position. If they ask, just let them know whatever happened. Never give your opinions about your previous employer, b/c that is a big mistake.

About the gap, just let them know that you wanted to take your time to find a company that was suitable for you.
