  1. I have found that traditional varnish was solvent based, and by adding turpentine it thinned it out very well, but by heating it with a paint stripping gun , and adding less turpentine it gives a better finish. Turpentine is being replaced by white spirit ( mineral spirit ) as genuine turpentine tends to be rather expensive,

There is now water based varnish available but it is for indoor use only.

  2. Anything that you use to claen up the brush when youre done. Mineral spirits works best for me. Careful a little goes along way.

  3. I believe it is mineral spirits but check the label on the varnish.

  4. Mineral spirits is the most commonly used thinner for varnish.

You should know though, that teak can be a problem for varnish, because of the natural oils in the wood.  Because of this, usually an oil finish is used rather than a varnish, or polyurethane, on wood like teak.  If youre set on using varnish, then you'll need to get a surface prep product to help remove some of that natural wood oil from the teak.  Wherever you purchase the varnish from should have it.  If you dont treat the wood before varnishing it, you're likely to have it bubbling off over time, as the oil in the wood comes to the surface.
