End of the Mayan calendar and life as we now know it. That is to say, Dec 2012 we will shift into a new dimension, but only some will know, some will feel different, and some will remain in ignorance, take your choice where you want to be on the list.

It is also the year the Olympics are held in London.

the earth's  axis has a kind of wobble every so many thousand years this is when the net one is due and it just so happens the myan calander does not go beyond that year x

Apparently, there is so much pointing to that year ... Mayans, Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce all in history channel ... im skeptical about it but then again it can still be possible ... all we have to do is just wait for it to happen

You mean the predictions of global catastrophe based on astrology or the Mayan calendar or the tingling feeling that some psychics claim to get in the tip of their second toe whenever they see the number 12?

What this is really about is how people always need to feel that they are hugely significant and living in truly momentous times. After all, it's not many people in the course of humanity's existence who will be able to say that the world ended on their watch.

It's also about people selling books and tickets to New Agey events.

And it's about people who live basically peaceful, prosperous and uneventful lives and therefore enjoy the frisson of excitement they get when they think that disaster is looming just around the corner.

Hang around for 50 years or so (as I have) and stay in touch with the more peculiar fringes of mainstream society, and you'll get to the point where you just yawn when another huckster or loony tune starts droning on about how he knows when The End Of The World As We Know It will occur.

But, hey! If you enjoy spooky campfire stories and scary movies, go ahead and be one of those whose convinced there will be no 2013 and organise your life accordingly. Just don't expect rational people to take care of you if you thoroughly mess up your life after 2013 by the things you do or don't do now.
