  1. It's fun and they are good to eat if you like dark bird meat. Marinate them in something that tastes good to you and then grill them wrapped in bacon.

  2. I hunted Dove for about 15 years in South Texas. I have never used a call or decoys. A little time invested in scouting for the flight paths and place your self along it while hunting.

    Fun and great eating.

  3. ya any bird hunting is fun. ummm i dont know how they taste i have never tried but good luck.

  4. Forget about decoys & calls etc... Cook them in a crock-pot add whatever seasonings & spices you like to them.* They are awesome challenge to wing shoot and harvest.* Take lot's of ammo with you.* Use 7 1/2 size bird shot.*

  5. dove is very tasty. I know its a little cliche', but they really do taste like chicken, just a little stronger flavor.the only edible piece of meat is the breast, the rest is too small to get more than a bite out of.

my favorite recipe is dove and dumplings.

Dove are considered one of the harder game birds to hunt. when flying, they can change direction and altitude without changing speed, and they almost seem able to "dodge" shots in mid air.

i have used decoys successfully for years, but i have never heard of using a call for them.

set up your decoys at a known range from your blind or hide, and wait for them to come in. i have had them land less than 10 feet from me, while using decoys.

another good place to hunt is a pool or pond near their feeding grounds. they will get a drink several times a day while feeding, and will drink again before going to roost in the evening.

  6. Bird hunting is a lot of fun with some good eating at the end of the day. Dove hunting moves very fast so it is perfect for you, the decoys would depend on where you hunt, if you are in a field they may help but if you are in open country it may not.

  7. ok dove hunting is the funnest in the world, i never used a call but decoys do work, when you cook dove wrap it in bacon and put a jalapeno in the middle, best bird you will ever taste

  8. It is a heck of a lot of fun and a really challenging sport.  Those little suckers can fly fast and are erratic.  it takes a good shooter to bring home a bag limit of doves.

I can tell you how to fix them in a way that is delicious.  Split the breast and put half a seeded jalapeno in it and close it up around the jalapeno.  No, it won't be too hot.  Then you wrap a piece of bacon around the breast and pin it in place with a toothpick.  When you have all of the b*****s ready, put them in a zip lock bag and pour in enough Italian salad dressing (whatever your favorite brand is) to cover the b*****s.  Let them marinade in the refrigerator over night.  The next day, you grill them.  Preferably over a charcoal fire but a gas grill will work, too.  They are absolutely delicious!

  9. AKA 'squab' and considered a delicacy. Doves and pigeons are the traditional prey of trained falcons or hawks, in the ancient art of falconry. That would be a classier way to do it.

Of course that requires some learning and training and such, so I don't suppose it will make a comeback.

  10. very good eating.i like to roast them with garlic and rosemary.for mourning dove decoys are a waste of time.just hunt near power lines, they love to roost on the lines.just don't shoot towards the lines.

  11. I love Dove Hunting it is great fun they are good eating to.

  12. Dove hunting is some of the most fun you can have in the field. Sometimes, the birds just sail along in straight lines, just begging you to shoot them. Other times, they flush from trees or brush and by the time you recover from being startled, they have zigged and zagged 6 different directions. They seem to find holes in shotgun patterns, and I swear some of them are bulletproof. I learned to hunt doves when I was 12 with a .410 single shot shotgun (talk about a challenge!), and the biggest problem I had was aiming quickly before the dove was out of range. A few years ago, I took my son dove hunting on a father/son trip with 4 other pairs of dads and sons. My son & I were both hunting with single or double barrel shotguns, and all the others had either automatics or pump guns. At the end of the day, my son & I had shot 20 shells and had 10 doves. Some of the other boys shot a box or two of shells and nobody had more than 6 doves. Plus, there were a lot of really sore shoulders on the other guys.

Dove meat is a definite delicacy. You don't have to do much to clean them, just sort of peel the skin off the breast and throw everything but the breast away. Take the breast, fold it around a slice of jalapeno pepper, wrap it in bacon, and cook it over the campfire or on a grill. You will understand why God gave us taste buds.

Don't worry about decoys or calls. Just work tree lines near grain fields or river bottoms, and bring your reflexes.
