All the shades are pulled but its 106 in Texas and my house is about 1400 square feet. I know the central HAC is old but I was hoping it would hold out a few more years.

  1. if it use to do the job, it might just be a little low on freon now.

  2. Put new filters in. make sure the outside unit doesn't have anything blocking the vents, is trash or shrubs. Worse case, you may need to recharge the freon in the system. Of none of those work, then  you might have to replace it. Also, keep in mind, 106 is a lot for an AC to cool. You could try turning on an exhaust fan when you cook, this should put the heat from the stove on the outside, and help cool your place. Also, try using fans, to help circulate the air.

  3. get your condenser coil cleaned

  4. It is holding out.

Everything is still running and thats good.

It just needs some attention, maybe a small a small refrigerant leak and is not running to capacity.

Also if the units are not cleaned properly that can reduce it's capacity.

As others have stated if it has never worked well when it was hot then it may be just too small.

If it has worked likely it just needs proffesional service and check up.

  5. try turning the temperature down

  6. Gonna say that if you're in a southern state that's pretty much the accepted norm for summer at this point.

Change/check your filters, etc if you haven't already.

  7. Your AC unit may not be big enough for your square footage. You also may have an insulation problem. The only other thing I can think of to do is try plastic on your windows, especially if you feel hot air coming in around them. You got to love the hot hot days of summer! Terrible winters and terrible summers! Good luck to ya! Hope you find a way to cool it down.
