What do you think Miguel Cotto could've done differently against Antonio Margarito to win the fight?

By the way, that was an epic fight! Anyway, I personally think that Miguel Cotto did plenty of things right. He blocked many of Margarito's punches and counter-punched effectively throwing hammer-like punches. However, he seemed satisfied with just throwing one power punch and run away after. I think that if he could've followed up on these punches and put the pressure back to Margarito, Cotto could've finished the fight. But hats off to Margarito, that guy was just relentless throwing a plethora of punches even when he was getting hit! Great fight! Now u heard my opinion, what about yours?

  1. nothing

  2. GO TO THE BODY! MEXICAN BRAWLERS AREUSE TO THIS!

  3. My analysis...

    1) He could definitely outbox Tony. If Cotto decided from the very start of the fight to outpoint him and go distance, he might've won. It was very clear that Cotto still had the KO mentality but he got frustrated after realizing that he could not hurt Tony.

    2) Everyone's right. Cotto did abandon the body! I don't know wtf he did that. Apparently, Tony's head is made of adamantium! If Cotto invested on the body, the story might've been different.

    3) Cotto's boxing was superb. Great counterpunching and head movement. BUT! He needs to stay off the ropes. Either by clinching Tony or side-stepping. I'm not yet sure why he stayed against the ropes for too long. Maybe, at that time,he felt he liked his odds when he's against the ropes. Well, he was wrong! He just gave Tony better chances of hitting him with Tony's volume punches. Against the ropes, Cotto had less space to move and box. He got peppered with body shots there.

  4. I was a classic. Cotto was not able to use punches to the body like he normally does because Margarito was ready for them and so Cotto couldn't capitalize on those. Although Cotto threw lots of punches to Margarito's face, it was like doing nothing. Margarito was fresh. Cotto shouldn't have run that much either, he threw lots of good punches but like you say he didn't follow up on them.  I'm waiting for the rematch to be announced.

  5. Margarito throws a lot of punches, so Cotto could have taken a tip from Ali and tried the ol' Rope-A-Dope.

Other than that, he should have gone to the body, trying to tire Margarito, and then go headhunting in the later rounds.

  6. He didn't punch to the body enough and he went to the ropes way too much. He gave up too much ground running away and that just made Margarito even more confident. At some point you gotta fight Margarito and let him know that he can't run over you. Even Paul Williams did that in his fight with Margarito. Cotto moved TOO much in my opinion.

  7. cotto would need stamina to hit and run for 12 rounds . plus the body shots are his best weapons. tony was covering up the body pretty d**n well cotto had no opening.

their wasnt anything he can do. he had a plan A plan B and a plan C and they all failed

  8. Cotto was indeed impressive, but this is what I would've told him to do differently had I been in his corner:

    1) Don't trade punches with this guy

    2) Throw more body punches

    3) Tie him up when he catches up to you

    4) Don't walk straight back

  9. First, Cotto is not a complete boxer and don't think his camp can train him to be one. Moved along the ropes tomuch. Instead of walking back, he need to get out quick. Needed to bring the fight back to the center of the ring. Dont have to bonce because that make you tired. I think Cotto over worked himself. Defense and stamina is a key thing to a boxer. That ear muff defense, take away from Cotto and that might be what's comfortable for him. Cotto is not good fighting in the pocket. I believe the reason why Cotto was along the ropes, becaue he wasn't train to use the ring. Cotto is not good fight backwards. Dont worry about knocking the guy out but winning rounds. I said before, Cotto doesn't like fighting a fast paste match. Look at the way clottey handle Margo before his injury. Clottey won the first 5 rounds and it was still a close dicision. I bet Roger mayweather could teach Cotto how to box but that wouldn't happen.

  10. Stay of the ropes and he should have kept the fight in the middle of the ring. punch counter punch and get out. More body work. more combinations and more road work, he was more exhausted than hurt it was suspect it look as though he let him win just to get a rematch.

  11. Cotto didn't stick to his basic style, which is "First the body before the head." Also, he forgot that he wields the most destructive body blows in the world today.

  12. He was clearly the better skilled boxer. I think he rehydrated himself to much between the weight in and the fight he should of tried staying at the slender weight he was during the weight in. In order to have the stamina to outbox for 12 rounds.

Cotto put in enough work to break down alot of guys by the 6th round i dont think he knew he wasnt gonna be able to break him down because he was ducking and dodging punches and coming back with 3-4 hits combos to Margaritos head.

I think the thought process was those combos would eventualy take an effect but i dont think it could of or will. Cotto need to train to box for 12 rounds.

If Cotto had enough stamina for 12 rounds instead of 6. He would of had a unanimous decision easy. From the punch stats it was obvious he was the more effect boxer. With less punches thrown and more punches landed. It was stamina that got him.

Other things that could of helped would of been blocking the uppercut. The bloody nose didnt allow him to breath through his nose. He was breathing through his mouth. Which really just goes back to why he had problems with stamina.

Cotto didnt have to hurt Margarito to win just be more effective for 12 rounds he didnt for 11. very possible to win a rematch. his jab was very effective yet he stoped using it later in the fight.

  13. i agree it was one of da best fights in da making

nd i personally think dat cotto was good out der

i liked his counter punching a lot,but it seemed like

der was no effect on margarito..nd i think cotto's
