What do you think-a cat with uti problems on a special diet should be switched to a high quality meat formula?

and maybe given a urinary supplement. Do you think this will ward off infections and blockages. Mainly crystals forming in his bladder. I don't like the ingredients in the prescription food he was recommended; it's mostly low quality chicken feed c**p so I don't think it's worth it. I don't think it is good enough for him. Would this be a good option for him? How can I stimulate him to drink more? Is there anything to promote more drinking in cats?

Wet food would probably be ideal. Nothing dry or wet with fish, fish flavors are suspected to help cause the crystals.

I would explain your issue to the vet and ask what is so special about the prescription food.  It can also be worth getting a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th opinion.  Try finding a holistic vet in your area.  I wouldn't recommend against what your vet said since I don't know all the issues but many vets are supported in part by money from pet food companies so I would want other professional opinions before going with a prescription food.

Prescription diets work for a reason. If your talking about the argument that they have by products in them that is stupid. There are two types of by products those that are digestible those that are not. The digestible ones play an important part in your pets health. Just think if your cat was in the wild it would eat the whole animal. Even the part we think is disgusting. Just think these diet companies are not like grocery skedtore brands they have vets and scientists studying the food.  I linked to Hills P/D info for their urinary diet. If you dont like one company there are a few that make veterinary exclusive diets. I have seen people go off the diets then come back in with the same problems. Ultimately its your choice though
