  1. I am a birth through pre-k educator in Tennessee. I have a master's degree in human development and learning with a concentration in early childhood development and learning.  I have worked with preschool age children for several years in a center that implements DAP.  The core principals of developmentally appropriate practice are that learning should be based on three core concepts: 1. what is known about child development, 2. what is known about the individual child, and 3. what is known about the culture and ethnicity of each child.

Basing learning on child development is a very effective and appropriate way to teach young children, because the learning environment can be used as a way to individualize instruction for all children within the environment by utilizing hands-on, concrete experiences and offering opportunities for in-depth exploration of topics.
