Question:

What do you think about Betta Bowls

I currently have a Crown Tail Betta in a 5 gallon aquarium with a good filter . In September, I'm going to be moving into residence, and I am taking a 10 gallon Aquarium with me that has a Figure 8 Puffer in it. I also want to take my Betta, but If I already have a 10 Gallon there, I'm not going to have any room for the 5 gallon. (The 10 gallon is also brackish, so the Betta definately can't go in there.)

So my question is regarding bowls. I wouldn't normally be ok with keeping any fish in a bowl, but I'm really tight for space, so I was wondering what you guys thought of keeping him in a bowl? He's not much of a swimmer at all anyway, he stays in his cave all day, but I'm worried about ammonia levels. I know that lots of people keep fish in bowls, but I just dont think that its right. I was considering purchasing a 2.5 gallon aquarium kit thing that comes with a little filter. What do you suggest?

  1. yea get the 2.5 gal tank but if u cant a bowl is good to just change the water every week

  2. The bowl would be cruel, especially if the betta is used to a 5 gallon. Males should have at least 3 gallons to themselves. Bowls are harder to maintain a steady temperature, you can't cycle them, and of course, they're very small.

The 2,5 gallon might be your best bet, if you're sure you won't have any room for the 5 gallon - although I've seen some inventive placings for 5 gallons. My aunt has a 5 gallon tank on one of the tables in her living room, and I have a 10 gallon on a bedside table.

And bowls should have their water changed every FEW DAYS. Ammonia builds up during that time. If you change it every week, you'll have a sick fish on your hands before long.

  3. well the 2.5 gallon tank would be better, but unlike other people, i think bowls are fine if they have at least one gallon of water. i have 2 male bettas, and for a few months i had to put one of them i a bowl. but he is still in the bowl, doing fine. but without a filter you'll probably have to do weekly water changes.

  4. if its a 5 gallon filtered heated bowl i dont mind
