  1. its a milder version of communism and becoming more capitalism.

i think it is doing fine now with the open door policy. i could see that it is doing more good to the people in the country and the economy is booming. it is just like china.

  2. Well, it certainly hasnt helped the country very much has it? most are still living in poverty and the government hasnt done much to help its people. Yes I agree at least theres no more war but if the other side had won the VN war, there still woudlnt be any more war anyway, right?

  3. Contrary to what Hien described, the communists did not bring peace and tranquility to the Vietnamese people or to the people of neighboring countries. Rather, the communists caused more destruction to their own people than the French and Americans did, but they don’t want to admit to it. After Vietnam reunited under a single communist government, the country became an aggressor nation by invading and controlling Cambodia as well as controlling Laos. In the home front, the communists were incredibly harsh to the South Vietnamese.

Two of my uncles were sent to re-education camps. Both of them had all of their arms and legs broken several times. One uncle had his eye ripped out of his skull. He was release after seven years and weighing less than 80 lbs. The other uncle was imprisoned for almost 12 years for his role in the South Vietnamese secret service. He was beaten so severely that he suffers permanent brain and eye damage.

There are scores of my family who had property taken away by the communists for no reason. A communist official shows up at their house and tells everyone to leave immediately with only what they are wearing. This was so commonplace that my family hid what belongings they had left in the jungle to keep the communists from taking it.

In my opinion, the worst atrocities by the communists were with the Con Lai, which are the half-breed American-Vietnamese kids like myself. The communists killed many thousands Con Lai, because these children were perceived as reminders of American occupation. Those who weren’t killed were deprived of an education and faced a life of poverty and were often abandoned by their own family. Their only crime was having an American father.

If you don’t believe anything that I stated so far, then you have to believe this. Millions and millions of Vietnamese risked their lives to escape the country for many years after the Vietnam War ended. The odds of survival were against them, yet they would still risk getting killed over staying in Vietnam. If the communists were so peaceful and caring to their people, then why did many millions of Vietnamese risked getting killed rather than stay in their own country under communist claims of safety and prosperity?

Why Hien and other native Vietnamese will fiercely oppose what I stated is because they don’t know any better. More than 60% of today’s native Vietnamese were born after the Vietnam War and they were taught what the communist want them to know. My own wife is among them, and she is experiencing difficulty in realizing a different truth about her country and government. She was born and raised in the North, and had no knowledge about how terrible the communists were to the South Vietnamese until she came to America. All she knew was how wonderful Ho Chi Minh was and how successful communism was in uniting the country and making it prosper.

Today’s Vietnam is much different than pre-1986 Vietnam. It took almost eleven years after the fall of Saigon for the communist to turn Vietnam into the third poorest country in the world for per capita income. The communists had no choice but to declare their central controlled (communist) economy a complete failure and take steps towards developing a market (capitalist) economy. A little over 20 years after adopting Doi Moi (reform) in 1986, Vietnam is now realizing the greatest economic era in it’s very long history and is the second fastest growing economy in Asia.

Communism in Vietnam today compared to twenty years ago is as different as North Vietnam and South Vietnam were during the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese people are experiencing more and more freedom as their communist government relaxes it’s grip. The current government assembly under Vietnamese President Nguyễn Minh Triết has already established policies that could lead to free elections sometime in the future. All this was accomplished by them without a single bullet fired. This peaceful evolution is something the Vietnamese can be very proud of.

I believe the Vietnamese people have many reasons to be proud of their country’s accomplishments in a relatively short time. However, I also believe Vietnam’s communist government is still very corrupt. Then again, our U.S. government is not without corruption either. Furthermore, I believe the U.S. should have shot dollar bills instead of bullets during the Vietnam War, which would have spared millions of lives and Vietnam would be 40 years more advanced by now. Then again, that’s hindsight and you can't change what has already happened.

  4. are they still communists over there?  I thought they changed to a different form of government?  Was it socialism or something?  Or was that Russia?  Well, anywho, if they're still communists, i say let them run their government the way they want.  We tried to impose democracy over there in Vietnam war and we lost big time.

  5. Communists sucks everywhere, especially in VN.

  6. Nothing to think about it is there country, they can do whatever pleases them. Despite American attempts to bomb the people into oblivion they are now reunited and Vietnam is rapidly becoming a popular tourist destination. Take a trip and see how happy and pleasant the Vietnamese are its worth it.

  7. It is still a communist Country but I don't think it's as extreme as China in the bad old days for example. After that, fine...Communism is great thing , in theory;)

  8. Communism claims itself to be PERFECT, that in this society, no one should be living in poverty; there is NO GAP BETWEN THE POOR AND THE RICH and the properties are all shared among the citizens! But juz look at the reality, is that true? a big NO! Absolutely not. So I doubt about its promise!

It's juz like a kind of Utopianism. And I think VN is a Socialist Republic country, it has yet to reach the so-called PERFECT destination of COMMUNISM defined by Marxism.

@MrNoName above me: Yeah, agree with you in this point too. "Millions and millions of Vietnamese risked their lives to escape the country for many years after the Vietnam War ended. The odds of survival were against them, yet they would still risk getting killed over staying in Vietnam. If the communists were so peaceful and caring to their people, then why did many millions of Vietnamese risked getting killed rather than stay in their own country under communist claims of safety and prosperity?"

Haha! RE-EDUCATION is a really familiar word for the older generations, which is Cai Tao in Vietnamese!

  9. They brough the peace for us. Now have no war in Vietnam now, have no sorrow, death , boom, gun.....
