I think she's a quack.

She does have a bit of a sneer to her doesn't she. That's part of the act. Just as any other celebrity: radio, TV, movies or authors (and she does three of the four, and makes lots of $$ doing it). But I think over the years, it's hard not to sneer when you are answering the same question for the same clueless person for the umpteenth time.

And yes, she does have call screeners who listen and look for certain things in her callers for that particular show. Especially if there is a special topic. That's also part of the biz. As is pandering to women 25-54 years old who make ad people salivate. It's the primo demographic that is listening to the radio from 10-3.

So,as one who answers the same question quite often right here on this web site ;<) I'm inclined to cut Dr. Laura a little slack. Maybe even add some admiration for making it pretty big in a tough business.

I've listened to her periodically, and most of what she says "used to be" plain old common sense. But it is telling that so few of her callers have it.  Laura can be pretty condescending to callers. Someone who calls themself a therapist can be confrontive but still be empathic. She neither. She is assaultive and judgemental.

Some people respond to that. I've been a CD counselor, and I've had to be confrontive with clients. But being confrontive can be done without judgement. Most people are harse on themselves. They don't need other people doing that as well.
