I went to Bali, which is a bit apart from the rest of Indonesia because people there are more Hindus than Muslims.

People are extremely nice and smiley. Obviously one's first reaction will be "they are nice to get your money" but they're not. People are genuinely friendly: they'll greet you on the street, just saying "hello, Welcome to Bali". You can easily engage conversation and they might take you to places where tourists don't go so that you can discover the real thing!

They're not as poor as one could think as well; the definition of poor and rich is not the same there; you do not see that many beggars or children on the streets.

The local Balinese people are now overcome by Javanese people who come over to work (tourism, wooden furniture, business, etc) which is a shame because the "culture" is somewhat different.

The island is beautiful from sandy beaches to volcano, luxurious vegetation, Balinese Temples are superb.

they have Hindu celebrations, which I do like.

I do not know about anything the rest of Indonesia though...

Infamous for the "Chinese Holocaust" where 3 million Indonesian Chinese were slaughtered by the army and pogroms instigated by President Sukarno during the late 60s, and the more recent 30 September Movement anti-Chinese pogroms under Suharto in 1998. Despite its natural wealth, it has repeated fallen behind the other Asian 'Tigers' because of it policies to supress the entrepreneurial drive of the indigenous Chinese population. A muslim country, it could still fall under radical jihadist Islam. That would create problems for the west and many of its neighbours such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Australia.

P.S. Pangkor and Langkawi are in Malaysia and not Indonesia.

Never been there myself, but i know a lot of people from there.

I knew a girl from Bali she was really nice, and they cook awesome food :)

I've booked a holiday there next year...Lankawi and Pangor Laut. They look great in the brochure I hope they are at least half as good in real life. I'll let you know when I come back.

They look similar to Thai people, South East Asian.

They are muslims, so can be more polite than other races, I guess.
