I think its about time...the whole team captain having to be a Canadian thing is soooo over-rated.

Johnny Gottselig of Odessa, Ukraine was the first European captain to win the Stanley Cup in 1938 with Chicago (and there is an exhibit at the Hockey Hall of Fame denoting this).

Lidstrom will be the first European TRAINED captain to win.

There's nothing to think about, he's one of the greatest players in the history of the game, and has been a leader for years.

it's impossible.

everyone who is ANYONE knows that a european captain'd team canNOT win the cup. it cannot happen. that's why only the "dumb" teams choose non-Canadian captains. they purposely are admitting that they can't win the cup. if detroit wins 4 games first, then the NHL will extend the series to however many games necessary for the Penguins to win.

best of 9, 11, 13, ... 69, 71, ... 511, etc.

just ask the "experts".

I have no problem with a European Captain winning the Cup.  These guys are Captains for a reason... and it's not because they are European or Canadian!

   If Lidstrom does raise the Cup this year, I can't think of a more deserving Captain in the NHL in comparison to him.  He is an absolutely fantastic defenceman.  He scores, shuts down the other team, plays very hard, does not take penalties, and leads by example!

   Ask any real hockey fan of other teams and they would pretty much all say that they would love to have Lidstrom on their team!

Not a big deal he has already won the cup 3 times as an alternate captain and the con smythe trophy once.
