really a 223.cal rifle bullet is a short 22.cal but it is more powerful because it is gas operated and gas builds up in the chamber pushing the bullet with great force making it have a recoil like a 9mm i want one but my mom does not like a gun with a lot of recoil an sound but she want's something with a large mag like at least 30 rounds

  1. The .223 is far more powerful than a standard .22

Also the 223 round from a short barrel is extremely loud and has an enormous flash. That gun would blind you in the dark and probably destroy your hearing after the first shot.

You want low recoil and a high capacity mag? Get a Glock17/19 in 9mm and one of the 33 round magazines available.

  2. Listen kid, I admire your tenacity, this is at least the 3rd time you've posted trying to get the answer you want on that gun. LOL Im not running you down but you dont need a 30 rnd 22 for home defense and you dont want a hipower rifle round to use in the house. A shotgun, or a largebore pistol is much better for what you say the gun will be used for. They have plenty of power to stop an invader, in the case of the pistols, while loud, very little in the way of recoil. The shotgun will have more recoil but is more manageble due to it being a long gun, easier to hold on to. You also have the over penetration factor. A 223 would likely not stop very soon even after you shot through a door unless you used frangible rounds. There you have the chance of shooting someone you dont want to shoot because you missed your target. I know you jsut think this gun is cool, and it could be, I have nothing against them, but they just arent home defense guns. Your mom needs to get a 9mm- 45 acp  and learn how to shoot it, that or a 12 guage pump.

Gas operated has more to with cycling the action, than anything. You dont need 30 rounds for home defense either.

  3. I personally prefer a 9mm for home defense.

  4. I don't even know where to start, except you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.  That's not your fault, schools should be teaching the basics of firearms just like everything else, but that just isn't PC

Okay, for starters, the PLR-16 is a rifle with it's stock cut off and it's barrel chopped short. To call it a handgun is just playing with legallize definitions to the extent that the truth is obscured.

The 223 is a LOT more than a 22 short, and it's power comes from the amount and type of gunpowder contained in the case, and is in no way related to your incorrect definition of 'gas operated'.  Further, it will have a heck of a lot more recoil than a 9mm.

Guns have recoil.  It is basic phyisics.  The more powerful the gun the more it will kick.  Of course, a heavy gun will recoil slower, so it will feel less harsh.  Further, all guns are going to be extremely large.

Requesting what you and your mom wants just isn't realistic.

You might as well say you want a pet elephant, but you want one that is no bigger than a housecat, and one that costs $100 or less, and never poops.

It just isn't going to happen.

I suggest a nice 9mm handgun, be it glock, springfield, beretta, ruger, sig, whoever.

Or, a nice 38 special or 357 magnum revolver (a 357 revolver can shoot 38 specails, which is smart for home defense, less flash and less recoil and less deafening roar) A nice medium frame gun like a Smith and Wesson model 10 or model 686, or a Ruger GP-100, or the Ruger SP 101 with a 3 inch barrel.

Or, a nice pistol caliber rifle, like the Beretta Storm Carbine.  Because it is a carbine it is a lot bigger than a handgun, hence it is heavier, and will kick very slowly and softly due to that size.

  5. For self-defense, a 12-gauge shotgun is more effective than a .223.  The .223 is designed primarily for long-range hunting of small game.  No need for a 30 round magazine.  You could get a Mossberg 12 guage with an 8 shot capacity.  With a 12 guage, you generally would only need one shot per attacker.  Your house isn't likely to be attacked by a group of between 9 and 30 so the 8 shot capacity should be meet both you and your mom's needs just fine.

Plus, if you ever go hunting, the 12 guage can be used for everything from small game like rabbits to larger game like deer.

The recoil isn't too bad with 2 3/4 inch shot shells, and you can add things like recoil pads or weights to further reduce the recoil if you go shooting a lot.

With ear-plugs, the sound isn't bad.

  6. I'm not sure exactly what your question is or where you are going

    A 223 is no where near a short 22

A 223 pistol has a greater recoil because it is a much more powerful round that generates much more muzzle velocity and energy

Being gas operated has little to nothing to do with that

My personal opinion is that the PLR is not a very good home defense gun

from the sounds of it you would be better served with a riot size shotgun or a gun designed for defense not long range target shooting

Home defense will always happen within 20 yards and usually within 20 feet there is no need for a gun designed to be used at 100 to 200 yards

That would be like taking a Harley Fat Boy to the motocross track

If you don't like sound and recoil get a .45 or 9mm

If you really don't like sound and recoil get a ball bat cause that's what guns do and how you know that they are working
