  1. A very important reason for materials to have a built in control of error is to allow children to develop independence from the adults. the control of error also provides a meaningful way for children to repeat the exercises multiple times, gaining greater and greater success, as well as concentration.

The point of interest is something that helps children focus. that also leads to greater concentration. Montessori observed that once children begin to concentrate, many of their "deviated" behaviors begin to diminish.

  2. Not much, they both suck.

  3. To add to what Aleta said, I love these things for one simple reason:  They help students who are nervous come into the classroom.  For example, I often see very shy children come in who do not want anything to do with coming to school.  I will usually take out one of the cylinder blocks and set it in front of the child.  I give a presentation on it and, as I pause at the points of interest, the child seems to really take notice.

After the presentation, I carefully remove each cylinder then offer to the child to try to put them back.  The child feels more comfortable from there and will often do it on his or her own or with us taking turns.  I purposefully, if we're working together, put one in the wrong place.  Sometimes the child notices - sometimes the child does not notice.  Either way, it has to be corrected.  I might play with it to try to figure it out, but the child actually ends up figuring it out.

That confidence almost always gets them interested in putting that one away and getting out one of the other cylinder blocks.
