ergenekon was the legendary turkish  homeland.it was filled with wonderous lush fruit trees and animals to hunt aswell as a great river to catch fish.

then the turks outgrew it and had to move out,yes it is a shame.

It started its career as a viable investigation, but these days most people think it is a travesty of an investigation used to scare and punish opposition.

This isn't post WW1 Germany and we know how fascism can come with democratic means. And we are alert.

The Ergenekon operation started with the investigation of 27 hand grenades found in a house in Istanbul last year. Then the investigation widened and transformed into an operation to crackdown on the "Ergenekon  Organization", which allegedly aimed at paving the way for a military coup against the government.

More than 100 people were taken into custody in the operation, while almost 50 of them were arrested, including journalists and retired commanders.

The Ergenekon organization was claimed to be the mastermind behind the assassination of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, and is planning to kill Nobel prize-winner Orhan Pamuk.

However the Ergenekon operation intensified after the closure case was filed against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). The operation was not limited to retired army members or Turkish patriots but widened to prominent opponents of the ruling AKP.

Prime Minister RTE has previously said the closure case was a response to the government’s determination in the Ergenekon operation. However some observers say the wider Ergenekon operation could be seen as an instrument to suppress the opponents of the government.

People who were taken into custody or arrested under the operation include:

with all due respect to the former answers, Dogu Perincek has never been a leftist. In fact, I believe he has been a provocating agent. In my opinion, he is a right wing nationalist. The same goes for Alemdaroğlu. As a Dr. of medicine, and the rector of Istanbul uni., I was shocked to hear him say he was ready to conquer a neighbouring country and kill people!!!

Ilhan Selcuk, I hear has swung from left to right. Sinan Aygun is  also a right wing nationalist, who was given TRNC citizenship by Denktas in half an hour!

Apart from these, I do not have much idea about the Ergenekon case.
