  1. Breeding is a bad business. There is a pet overpopulation problem. Exotics need specialized care. Most people who own them do not care for them properly. They are 'novelty pets' for the most part.

It's not easy to find good homes for them and irresponsible to sell them to anyone for a buck.

"Reputable breeders" screen the homes and take back any animal from buyers if it doesn't work out. They do not sell to pet stores or online ads. And consider the vet bills. They can run into the hundreds if not thousands.

And being a 'retirement' home for retired breeders or animals that you cannot breed due to poor genes. Responsible breeders keep these animals for life.

  2. i think they cool cuz otherwise how would people get cool pets like sugar gliders and skunks

haha its funny the person below me says theres to many exotic pets. theres like 1 exotic pet for every 100 normal pet like a cat and dog i meen dam, and i never see exotic pets at a humane society and they catch a high price anyway, why would someone kill them if they could sell them?

  3. its very expensive and the fact of the matter we need no more of this type of animals they should not be pets and therefore there are alot of deaths and animals being thrown away cuase after they are cute they get mean and gone. so i would do somethign else.

  4. Starting it as a 'business' is already starting off on the wrong foot..

If you love raising exotic animals, caring for them, and teaching prospective owners how to care for them, then, you're probably already doing that as a hobby.

To be successful and do it ethically, you have to start with a real love for the animals you intend to work with and a passion to always improve- not just to produce as much as possible..

Raising animals is never a guarantee. You may spend 3 years raising an animal, and then have it end up egg bound despite your best preventative measures.

If you need to make money to support yourself, I'd say start a business NOT involving animals and just enjoy them as a hobby. As soon as you rely on them for a living, you start making poor husbandry decisions..
