Question:

What do you think about giving a nickname?

This sounds like a strange question but I am naming my son John after my father who died when I was in 3rd grade. I like the name Jack though - I feel like it is a little more modern. I know Jack is often a nickname for John. Would this be disrespectful to my dad? Would John still have the same meaning?

Just looking for opinions. Thanks.

  1. No, it would not be disrespectful. Jack is a great nickname for John.

As long as it means something to you, then it's great.

  2. It definitely would plus it means something to you too :-) You have a cute baby bump.

  3. Can you give him 2 middle names?

    Jackson John Stirling?

    Jack Sterling John?

  4. We named our son Jack after my husband's brother, John. He is still living, we just wanted Jack to have his own name. My brother-in-law was honored by it. I think your dad would be, too. (And yes, it still has the same name meaning).

  5. I think "Jack" as a nickname for John is kind of a stretch.

  6. It wouldn't be disrespectful at all. You are having the baby. Name him whatever you want. John would still have the same meaning.

    I love the middle name.

  7. no I don't think it's disrespectful at all.  nicknames are just everyday in life.  I don't have any children yet, but I have nicknames for my friends babies, friends, husband and pets :o) your dad would be very happy for you! Good Luck and Well Wishes!!

  8. Yeah, it would be totally cool.  Then it would be respectful and a great thing for your dad, as well as a name you like.

  9. It isn't disrespectful at all.  Both John and Jack are such classics, they're both very nice.

  10. lol, we are naming our son Jack. i love it. i wanted ot name him after my grandpa who just died, but i couldnt figure out how to incorporate his name. his name was Charles, and i just didnt think it fit. you could name him John, and leter on if he wants to be called something else that would be fine. Thats sweet to name him after his dad. i like the name John. i always have liked the simple names

  11. What about the name "Jonathan", thats even more modern and is more like the name John...But Jack is cute! Hope this helps! =)

    Jackson John

    or

    Jonathan Jack

    or

    Jack Jonathan

  12. john definataly

it;s very nice to your father

and it's a waaay better name than jack!!

jack and jill went up the hill..

  13. I couldn't bear to have a son with my dad's name (he would get in trouble and I would feel awful yelling at Jason, you know?) so we decided to give a boy my dad's first name for his middle name. You could name him Boy name John. That way you're still giving him your dad's name but you have a little more leeway. Good luck!
