What do you think about handmade christmas gifts?

I know this is kind of a weird question; however I have taken up knitting and for some reason caught on to it quickly. I have also noticed that when you knit a gift for someone they do one of two things. they 1) know how much time and effort you put into it or 2) think its c**p and hate it. Now, I'm not talking about cheap little fuzzy scarves; I'm talking about top of hate line yarn and child sweaters and felted bags.. anyway, so now that you've read my rambling my question is: what do you think of had made gifts? would you like it and appreciate it or would you think its crappy? thanks for taking the time to answer!
