  1. I think it's a cash-grab because the cost of the bags to the store is factored into the item pricing or cost of operations at a fraction of a penny each. The exception would be the no-frills shops where you have the option to carry your items out in boxes.

That's not to say I'm always against charging customers extra, but customers have no control over how their purchase is bagged or how many are used by the clerk, so it seems punitive to make them pay more for something that is already paid for in the purchase total.

On the other hand, if the environment is such a concern to the proprietor they should supply paper bags instead.

  2. I think people should be charged because it is an unnecessary waste of plastic and perhaps it would remind people to start using reuse-ables. I keep a few re-useables in the car, a couple under my pushchair, and 2 fold up ones in my handbag so i am never without them.

I also think it is a great idea what your shop is doing for charity.

  3. I think its fair. When I was younger all we had were shopping bags. There is too much plastic being thrown away these days, we have all heard about the effects on our environment. Like everything else in life we shall have to get used to it.
