What do you think about people who like trainspotting? If you're a trainspotter why do you like it?

I personally don't understand what people see in watching various trains pass, but we are all different.

That's like asking "What do you think about people who watch football games?"

It is a personal preference.

they note down the number of the train and they tally every time they see it and get all excited if they see a new number or a train which is rare to see.

i have no idea why they do it theres way more exciting and more fulfillin pass times out there

Trainspotting was a very grim film indeed but it seems to have a cult following. I believe it won awards (or nominations) for screenplay so it appears to have some artistic merit.

Try standing close to a railway line when a steam train , (a big one !) like for example 34067 "Tangmere" thunders by and just try not to be impressed !

I used to like train spotting, not as interested now as the trains aren't as interesting. Look at it like this. If I said I liked Grand Prix racing, that would be OK. You watch a small car with an engine turning out several hundred horse power go past at perhaps 200mph. You watch trains, you see something with several thousand horsepower moving a heavy train at anything up to 150mph, far more impressive. At the end of the day it's horses for courses.
