What do you think about people who name their kids after baseball players?

Would you do it? & What you think about it?

I know a girl who named her son George Herman (after Babe Ruth, obviously)

I just thought I'd see what other people thought.

Oh, & if you think my questions are "stupid" or "annoying" don't answer them. :) Thanks!

  1. one of my best friend's name is Nolan. He is named, obviously, after pitching great Hector Nolan...lol Nolan Ryan.

I think it is cool to name kids after athletes as long as you dont do something crazy like name them dwayner (sorry, i think that name is just amazingly odd)

  2. nothing wrong with naming your kids after heroes I guess, as long as they aren't psychotic..then I guess you might have a problem  and your kid

  3. There are worse things for which you can be named....try "googling" "Worst Baby Names EVER"....you'll laugh....you'll cry.

Ball players themselves have been named for their predecessors for generations:  Ryne Sandburg was named after Ryne Duren....Juan Pierre was named after Juan Marichal....Robinson Cano was named in honor of Jackie Robinson (and his number 24 is 42 in reverse)...

I know a guy who named his daughter "Torri" after Joe Torre....that's actually kinda cute, I think...

    It beats fruit...

PS - "Yaz" the cat...that's great.

  4. I like the line about not answering your questions if they are stupid or whatever.  I think that all the time when people give answers about how dumb a question is.  Just don't answer it if you don't like it.

As for the answer to your question. I would not give my child a name like Fisk or Mantle but, a first name would be fine.  I like the idea of naming a pet instead since they don't have to listen to taunts by other pets about their names.  lol

  5. I just think it would be uncreative. However a lot of people do it. h**l look At Robinson Cano. Named after Jackie Robinson! No one should be able to tell you what you can & cant name your child!

Unless it was like that girl in hawaii named "Tullula Lula Does The Hula" now that is not a name! But that is a totally different debate right there! :)

  6. I think its stupid for people to have children.

George Herman is a tame name.  At least its not something stupid like...

    Rhenai Shanequa

    or better yet

    Dainyell Chenise

  7. Lol. Yeah parents just want to name their kids whatever they like, but that's just my opinion. I'd probably give my child a simple name like Jim or something.

EDIT: What's up with the 3 thumbs down? Haters...

  8. No problem there...

The same as naming your kid after your favorite rock singers.

There are many 44-year old guys named John, Paul, George, and Richard, and who were they named after???

  9. I don't think it is a big deal. However athletes are treated like gods and it is annoying. If you are going to name your child after a hero how about someone in history who did something great, like Rosa Parks, or Gandhi. I just don't understand the obsession with sports, I like the arts and history. I feel as if these people are truely talented and special.

  10. I suppose it's not bad although I probably wouldn't do it.

There was a player named Willie Mays Aikens who was named obviously after Willie Mays.

Chipper Jones named one of his kids Shea after Shea Stadium.

I did name my dog Grady after Grady Sizemore.

  11. I think it's their own decision but I don't really like the idea of naming your kid after someone else... I would do it

  12. I think your question is neither...is just a question.

My answer for it: Who cares, it's their right.

  13. I agree that if it's the first name that you actually like (or a last name that sounds like a first name), but I probably wouldn't do it unless they retired or something because they could be traded...to your rival team...which would really stink. I would do it if I happened to really like the name and the player.

  14. I think its cool like Robinson Cano after Jackie Robinson

  15. I think it's a bit strange but in all fairness still better than when Hollywood Celebrities be calling their kids Apple or something like that.

  16. I think it's fine as long as they aren't setting the kid up for incessant ridicule with Aramis Ramirez  or Maglio Ordonez

  17. Well, I personally like unique names...to each his own.

  18. I am a Dodger fan and had a girl. I didn't like the name Sandy and there were no other good names for a girl so I just gave her the same initials. LA Dodgers = Lilith Ann D..........

  19. Wow if that picture is of you, you're hot!  Don't have a kid with a baseball player and certainly don't name your child after one.

I think baseball is the laziest of lazy man's sports.  You could actually stand in the outfield for several hours without doing anything else at all.  If you played baseball or soft ball when you were a kid, you know it takes no stamina what so ever to hit the ball either, just good eye hand coordination and technique.  The pitcher and the catcher are probably the only guys on the team who get much excercise at all.

As proof, take a look at all of the players with fat beer guts.

I would only name my child after a base ball player, if I intended for him to be a lazy tobacco chewer.

  20. its fine if the kid luvs baseball idk bought peoples names it matters if they are nice and a good honest person

  21. My cousin flipped it around and named his son Jordan Michael - I like that name. That's a great question. A good friend of mine named his golden retriever Prince Semien Fielder - I thought that was awesome.

You're right though, it really depends on the name, for example: if Gaylord Perry was a favorite old-time baseball player of yours-it's not a good idea to torture your child with it. Today's B.J. Upton also might solicit immature snickers.

Also, parents have to be ready for the fact that their little tyke might not like sports and hence, the name will fall flat eventually.

Play it safe and keep it simple, like you said, if you love Ryan Braun-go for it. Ryan's a great name any way you look at it.

  22. i personally wouldn't do it, but i think is kinda cool for others ...it makes for a cool story later, unless the player they are named after does something stupid, then it becomes a curse......

  23. If it's a name they like. I named a cat after Jim Clancy. Not that I'm a fan of Jim Clancy but I liked the name Clancy.  He was the best cat and has gone over the Rainbow Bridge. I also have a cat named Tigger. Guess who he's named after.

  24. At least it is better than naming your kid after ESPN!

I used to have a cat named "Sox", but my kids are not named after a sports player.

  25. it's weird i think a kid should have his own name not someone elses

    Please do my quiz: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

  26. Stupid unless they are Notre Dame University player jk Its cool

  27. I don't necessarily mind it, but I'm not naming my kid "Dave Winfield (Last Name)" or "Kirby Puckett (Last Name)."

I think you're valuing sports far too much by doing that. I love sports, but there's more to life than the games. (Note: I like that Robinson Cano was named for Jackie Robinson, but I hope it was more for Jackie's social importance than his playing ability.)

And yes, naming your child for a player is a lot better than naming your child Espn.

  28. nope id never do it

i wanna give my future children a name from the heart not as a fan

    ciao x x x
