I share a classroom with another teacher. She and I get along great and we have a fairly strong professional and friendship. I know she is not an alcoholic, she does drink but on the weekends and every now and then, it seems very social. However, she puts kahlua in her coffee in the morning! I've inquired about it before, mostly in a joking manner and she says it helps her "wake up" and get a little "spunk" but it is never to get drunk and its not a big deal, that many people do it and I have nothing to be worried about. Fellow teachers, what do you guys think about this? I have such mixed emotions! (the alcohol is never in the school, she does it at home)

  1. Not sure about everyday. I have partaken in a beverage or two when I have had sore throats. I normally don't like to drink because having a buzz keeps me from being clear when I am communicating.

  2. Whether or not she is doing it at school....it doesn't matter. As a teacher you should know that this is very inappropriate! Think of it from the students, or parents point of view. If you were a parent to one of her students and you found this out, how would you feel about it. It is NEVER OK to be under the influence of anything (no matter the amount) at a school. They don't even let you smoke a cigarette on campus and you are wondering if this is OK. Are you OK???

  3. Unfortunately, some teachers (and other school staff) tend to have the most need, out of most professions, to have a little 'something' to take the edge off.  I'm not condoning it but I have worked in many industries and alcohol and/or marijuana are the most common 'escapes' for teachers and like staff.

Honestly, Kahlua (or any liqueur), unlike whiskey, rum, vodka, etc. does not have a high alcohol content but your concern is just - even if all she does is joke about it.

I would only go to a higher authority if it affected a student in a negative way.  Otherwise, just quietly observe her.

  4. Its 5 o clock some where

  5. Personally? I limit it to the first five cups.

  6. you know what else wakes you up? espresso lol or red bull.  it really sounds like its the start of a bad problem

  7. Sorry, she is an alcoholic.  But there's nothing you can do about it.  She will have to come to the realization on her own.

  8. sounds delicious
