well i just saw a segment of it on yahoo/ABC news, apparently the superintendent doesnt believe in security guards, he takes the airplane outlook and only some teachers will carry guns but will remain annonymous.

  1. Honestly, I foresee a gun being stolen.  Some students will steal anything that isn't bolted to the floor - pens, pencil sharpeners, rulers, textbooks (of course the kids that steal them are the same ones who never read them...), etc.  I'm sure teachers will have to keep their guns on them or locked up, but teachers are human and eventually one will make a mistake.  As for school safety, schools are already just about the safest place you can be.  You are more likely to be murdered at home or on the street than at school.  Of course, it could possibly prevent or limit the extent of a school shooting.  I could also see a teacher firing a few shots in the air to break up a fight - that would be funny!   And sometimes we teachers get pretty pissed at students - maybe having a gun would not be such a good idea.  : )

  2. I teach.  I would not want to carry a weapon, nor would I want the teacher across or down the hall to carry one either.  If weapons are needed then a police officer or security guard needs to be on duty in the school.  Don't get me wrong, I have weapons at home, but I don't believe school is the proper place to carry them.

  3. Why do the teachers need to carry weapons? Do the students carry them? A teacher should not be afraid to go to work, or used as target practice. If the students are carrying weapons so should the teachers.

Maybe if the parents did their job correctly and instilled values and morals in their children, no one would have to carry a weapon.

  4. Why not? I live in Texas and if the Teachers have their Own Gun, maybe when some Nutso Kid pulls His/Hers out, the teacher can pick them off Before they get to Shoot anyone Else. Makes Good Sense to me.

  5. Theres more to it... You need to read beyond what you hear in sound bites or quick news stories.

The district has 110 kids and less than 50 employees.

I teach more students than their entire district, and my building holds more adults.

Small districts can always do what they want. If they even have a school board, its probably been made up of the same people for generations. I'll bet that if you look into it, you'll see that carrying a gun is fairly common in that area of Texas. The news story I read - said 30 miles from the sherriff and near the highway - what does that tell you?

So what do I think? I think theres no reason to think its a trend. The liability issue alone would prevent the rest of the country.
