AUSTELL, Ga. - A teenager was decapitated by a roller coaster after he hopped a pair of fences and entered a restricted area Saturday at Six Flags Over Georgia, authorities said.

Six Flags officials are uncertain why the unidentified 17-year-old from Columbia, S.C. scaled two six-foot fences and passed signs that said the restricted area was both off-limits and dangerous to visitors, spokeswoman Hela Sheth said in a news release.

Authorities were investigating reports from witnesses who said the teenager jumped the fences to retrieve a hat he lost while riding the Batman roller coaster, said Cobb County police Sgt. Dana Pierce. Three security guards were keeping visitors away from the ride on Saturday.

Police said the ride was going full-speed when the teen was struck. The ride's top speed is 50 mph, according to the Six Flags Web site.

No one riding on the roller coaster was injured, Sheth said. The teen's friend also entered the restricted area but was not injured, Pierce said.

The teen and his parents were at the park with a group from the Oakey Spring Baptist Church near Springfield, S.C., police said.

  1. This is very sad news to hear, because I have been to Six Flags Great America in Illinois, and I know how the rides are and how fast they can go, but it really saddens me to read this, and you know having a kid for 17 years buying him/her food, clothing, car, and giving him love, especially since I read that he is from a Church, and all of that ends in a single mistake, and I can't imagine what his family is going through right now, it is very hard for me to hear this even, and to try to think how the parents feel is too much. When I have kids I will do my best to keep them safe and teach them to think and make better decisions and ask adults for help.

  2. it happed in Oakey Spring Baptist Church near? what is Oakey Spring Baptist Church?

  3. well  its just a hat your life or a hat apparently it was his life he could of bought a new hat. any ways if he didn't die he would be in BIG trouble and it is very very very sad though i cant imagine the pain his parents are in.

  4. well, it was careless, and sometimes careless things cost you.

  5. That is so horrible.  I can't imagine what his parents are going through right now.

I hope the family doesn't try to sue Six Flags over this.  It isn't their fault.

  6. The hat thing is a rumor. I wish people would stop stating it as fact. I live in Atlanta and on our local news they stated that he was jumping the fence as a short cut to get inside the park. Six Flags stayed open and they opened the Batman Ride back up right after the police investigation was over.

  7. ok look.... I'd like to feel bad for the kid, I relly would, but it was his own fault... although i do feel bad for parents.

  8. I'm not going to say anything harsh, I mean she was killed and that's sad, but she shouldn't have gone into the restricted area at all.  Even if she had dropped a hat on the ride, she should've either left it or gotten a park employee or someone to get it for her.

  9. It is very very sad. I am deeply sorry for his parents. This acts as a lesson to everybody that if you disobey the guide lines such as going into restricted areas, for any reason it is very very dangerous and you possibly could get hurt. Since not all the details (there is a debate over if he was trying to pull a "prank" pulling on the legs of a passenger of the ride, or if he was trying to retrieve his hat) I can't really judge. But if you every go to a Six Flags park and lose something go to the nearest guest relations, tell them what ride it was on and the specifics, then AFTER HOURS they will retrieve the item FOR YOU. You should never try to do this your self.

  10. yeah i live in georgia that is some crazy news..

it just a hat, 2nd of all fences are there for reason...

gosh people need to wake up...

    it sad, but also stupid...

dark knight comes out july 18th, and yet someone dies from the batman ride..

  11. Was it a girl or a boy? I've heard both.

In any case I think its tragic. Its proof that we as humans think we're invincible. DO NOT ENTER means just that....thus caution signs. I can't fathem witnessing that though. My heart goes out to the victims friends, family, and anyone that had to see the horror.

  12. Well I say it is pretty sad that he died. It wasn't a very smart choice to do what he did, and it most have been horrible for his friends to watch, and the passengers on the ride.  Again, it was a pretty stupid choice to make, but it's worse that he had to die. And what I want to know is, how expensive was that hat!? A hat isn't worth a life.
