entral California news:

A Soledad police officer and a Monterey police officer were arrested Friday while trying to smuggle firearms into Mexico, police said.

Police said Mexican police arrested Monterey Sgt. Jorge Matos and the Soledad officer as they tried to enter Mexico with several firearms and ammunition. Matos is a former employee of the Soledad Police Department.

Inspectors said they recovered 5,000 rounds of ammunition, tactical training equipment and two laptop computers.

Soledad Police Chief Richard Cox said officials from the Department of Homeland Security notified his office of the arrest on Friday.

Cox said an internal audit of the Soledad Police Department armory did not show any weapons missing. The Presidio of Monterey's police department also said it had no weapons unaccounted for.

Matos was fired during his probationary period after three AR-15 rifles disappeared from his home and could not be found.

The identity of the Soledad police officer was not released.

The two men will spend a minimum of 60 to 90 days in a Mexican prison before being brought before a judge.

If convicted, they could face a minimum of 15 years in a Mexican prison.

  1. I am a police officer and I work close to where the two officers worked.  Based on the information that has been provided to the press thus far it seems like the two officers acted in total violation of law.  Officers have great powers and are given great trust.   If they abuse the power and trust that is given to them they should receive the same punishment as any other law violator.  Being a cop is rough and having two idiots generating bad press does not help.

  2. They should have done their research before "knowingly" bringing in these firearms.  Now they have all the time to research their mistake.

  3. lol thats funny police being arrested by police

  4. If you play the game be prepared to pay the tab.  Sounds like these two jokers screwed up big time.

  5. They knew what they were doing.  Now they must pay the price, the Mexican price.

  6. It doesn't matter if they were or had been police officers, they violated the law of a foreign country.

They are subject to those laws.

5000 rounds of ammo is not something for hunting or even casual target practice.

It seems to me they had intent to sell the weapons and ammo.

  7. Breaking the law is breaking the law.

  8. I could care less if they were police or not.  Anyone caught doing that should be sent to prison for a long time.

  9. Thats Mexicos justice for you.

and PS those mexicans jails are not like the ones here they are harsh and brutal. Nothing like the ones here your lucky if you even get lunch their.

  10. Wow...those cops were dumb. They deserved to be arrested cause it still a crime and that is a really big slap in the face to the US police force.

  11. If the United States caught two Mexican law enforcement personall doingthe same thing, we would hold the law against them as well.

    Its Fair.
