  1. Its a great thing that schools are replacing junk food with healthier alternatives however unless this change is also made at home this change is at best giong to have very limited benefits. We are not going to be able to prevent children from bringing junk food from home or going out after to indulge. It is start and a good one.

  2. I think its a load of rubbish.  Kids ate chocolate 50 years ago and didn't get fat, now suddenly they're massively obese?

The answer isn't replacing a candy bar or bag of doritos with a hunk of lettuce or an apple.

Healthy food is only one part of leading a "healthy" lifestyle.  Maybe schools should think about reducing the amount these kids sit?  How much recess are kids 12 and under receiving?  How many are enrolled in physical activity clubs?  How many hours of homework are overzealous teachers assigning?  When kids sit down to do homework for 4 hours a night and 8 a day in class and then get fat, parents blame the candy bar?

This is total BS and the schools and parents know this.  They're just using the food companies as easy targets.  Do some primary research.  Find how much homework students actually do on average each day compared to physical activity.  Then you'll be able to prove these schools are just shifting the blame.

  3. The rising rates of obesity in young children & teens should cause food service managers to look at what is being served to these groups in school.

Children are being tested for their body/mass index in elementary school!  It's alarming but it is a factual tool to hand parents whose children are overweight.

There is also a new program called "Honey, we're killing the kids!" which has an episode dealing with what parents provide for their children to eat at home.

Finally, with the rise of obesity there has been a rise in the rate of diabetes.

    Good Luck!

  4. Oh yes, this is a good move. Kids get fast food and junk at home.If we don't want an over-weight next generation (too), then SOMEBODY has to do SOMETHING!

  5. I worked at a small primary school on the South Coast of NSW a few years ago Gerringong, and they had a healthy canteen policy, it worked very well, the canteen received awards every year for their menu, the kids loved it,, its a matter of educating the community that good food does not need to be rubbish,, I think its easier to introduce the concept in primary schools,, as teenagers have a greater disposable income and will leave the school grounds in search of their junk food hit

  6. as a teacher i see how important it is to have fresh food and freash HEALTHY foods

the kids will eat it if it is there and they no other option

  7. yes
