55? Are you kidding me? How bout we invent a new technology that doesn't rely on oil instead of decreasing productivity amoung Americans??

I know one thing, cops would be extra busy because there isn't anyone on the planet that will go 55 the whole way down the interstate!

  1. I think it is an excellent idea ! We need to control the people.Total and absolute control of the speed limit will deter anyone from attempting to commit speeding crimes on our highways. Not only will it save gasoline, which by the way has been put on the endangered species list, but it will generate revenue for failing municipalities who are in great need of funds.

  2. We had it for about 20 years, and it didn't work. One of the reasons that it was repealed in 1995 was that it was difficult to enforce. This country is too large to drive 55 mph.

  3. It wont happen, but you are supposed to get the best mpg that way and that could possibly be why.  Never will go into affect though.

  4. I hope it doesn't happen.  I guess this is the best our government can do.  Instead, of pushing for alternative fuel or making cars that can get you more that 21 miles a gallon.

    This it there only answer!!

  5. It was stupid 30 years ago when some idiot first proposed it, and it's even dumber now.

There's no fuel savings in lowering the speed limit...that's why they removed the 55 mph restriction in the first place.

The moron proposing it it is pandering.

  6. its a waste of my tax dollars to come up with stupid ideas like these

  7. I like the idea. And I do it too. I set my cruise control on 55 and all I have to do is steer. And I get about five more miles per gallon as compared to 75 MPH. Substantial saving for my wallet.

  8. They did in the 70s, and most people went 55.  If it gets bad enough, it will happen.

  9. How will slower speeds solve anything, we'll just get places slower, the same amount of fuel gets spent, just slower.  Absolutely dumb idea.  If I eat slower its doesnt mean Im eating less food, does it??

  10. It would be better to make the auto manufacturers build alternate fuel vehicles.

What they don't realize is that it will cost more in delivery of goods because it will take those long haul truckers longer.  After all they are paid hourly.

  11. It's a pretext, there's nothing magical about 55 mph.     Engines are built to be most efficient at 55 mph because that was (and still is in most states) the speed limit, not the other way around.
