What do you think about the medals?

I personally think that these olympics' medals are one of the bests in history. The design comprised of traditional gold/silver/bronze with use of different jade donuts was a stroke of genius. I didnt know bronze and dark green could look that good together though silver and gold takes it as the prettiest. the materials contrasted each other nicely but the meaning behind it (east meets west) was also very thoughtful.

however, I talked to a couple of my friends and they didnt really like it but instead liked the strictly gold/silver/bronze of the Athens medals. I thought it was pretty tame and not too eye catching.

Just wanted to know what others think and why :)

  1. I don't know, They are OK. I've noticed several medal winners actually going out of their way to turn the medals to the solid-medal side for pictures.

Just look at Phelps on the SI cover. Or the ever popular photo of He Kexin Holding up her Uneven bars gold.

From what I've seen, the Athletes seem to prefer the solid metal kind. I tend to agree with them.

  2. I think the medals were a great design... The front was solid metal and a definite link back to the Greek tradition while the back with the jade inlay is a definite nod to the Chinese culture of the hosts.

I really think it was a great touch.

  3. pretty original. i think jade representing asian country is kinda corny but its cool here. easily detectable host nation and year as it sets itself apart from the other medals by quick glance of backside

and to the other dude talking about people going out of their way to flip the medal over: it's because that is the front side. the jade detail is in the back

  4. I actually like this year's medals. The backs look ok to me.

  5. i like and there REAL gold!
