Do you know someone with the name? This is the only male baby name my husband and I agree on and I'm curious to see what others think.

Possible middle names:

Silas Evan

Silas Alexander

Silas Quinn

  1. I say go for it!  Especially since you and your husband both agree!

And it sounds like a fine, noble kind of name to me.  I've never met a Silas!  I like Silas Alexander myself, but all of the possible names you provided sound absolutely fine.

    behindthename.com says:

    SILAS

    Gender: Masculine

    Usage: English, Greek, Biblical

    Other Scripts: Σιλας (Greek)

    Pronounced: SIE-ləs (English)   [key]

Short form of SILVANUS. This was the name of a companion of Saint Paul in the New Testament. It was not used as an English name until after the Protestant Reformation.

    so then Iooked up SILVANUS:

    SILVANUS

    Gender: Masculine

Usage: Ancient Roman, Roman Mythology, Biblical

    Pronounced: sil-VAY-nəs (English)   [key]

Roman name derived from Latin silva "wood, forest". Silvanus was the Roman god of forests. This name appears in the New Testament belonging to one of Saint Paul's companions, also called Silas.

  2. My paternal great-grandfather's name was Marcellus.

His nickname was Silas, so it's always been very special to me.

And, one of my favorite books is Silas Marner, by George Eliot.

(I still have my copy from the mid-'60's, 12th grade English Lit.)

Silas Alexander has a strong, solid sound, to me.

  3. Personally, I think it sucks big-time.  I will probably get thumbs down for having a "negative" opinion, but I don't care.  You asked for honest opinions, and that is mine.  I will not lie just to tell someone what they want to hear if it isn't the truth.

  4. The name was popular in rural England in the 18th and 19th centuries My wife's gret grandfather was Silas .Silas Marner  was a novel written about a rural wood cutter by , I think by George Elliot ( who was female ! ) .

  5. I am not keen on the name myself, but I did find this information for you.

    Silas

New Testament: Greek name, a short form of Silouanus (Latin Silvanus, from silva wood). This name was borne by a companion of St Paul, who is also mentioned in the Bible in the full form of his name. The Eastern Church recognizes two separate saints, Silas and Silvanus, but honours both on the same day (20 July).

    Hope this helps.
