What do you think about the newest trend in home furnishing and style?

In the last 10 years especially, I have noticed many homes and apartments which almost seem like museum displays. Everything is carefully crafted to give the impression of style, taste, and no clutter. However, so much of it seems fake and contrived.

For example, my sister bought a house. It doesn't seem very functional. In her basement, she doesn't even have a clothes line, nor even a table for folding laundry.

The living room (as opposed to the family room, which has a tv) seems like it is never used. It's what I call a "museum room". I feel like buying her a velvet rope for the entrance.

It seems like a lot is just "for show". It is not like a living house.

On the one hand, I applaud the new trend for getting rid of clutter and horrible decorations. But I wonder if they have gone too far. Most walls are barren. They think that paintings or photos will destroy the look.

Do you like this style?

  1. My friend, I totally hear ya on this one.  Even though my wife and I have no kids (nor will we), I'm trying to find a way to make a clean yet "lived-in" feel.  Comfy, not formal, but relaxing.  AND I like the quirky art (sorry, lol -- would those be "horrible decorations"?) -- M.C. Escher, dogs shooting pool, etc.  AND I collect swords and short blades, kinda looking to display them all over the place, not just one room, so people can walk through the house and still not be sure they've seen everything, ya know?

So no -- I like my style, not the whole museum feeling.

    Have a great night!
