  1. China has more gold medals in large because of unfair judging in hte gymnastics competition. China only excelled in a few events - gymnastics, diving, table tennis, badminton.

The US lost a lot of gold medals they should have won, e.g. softball, and many in track. The US let themselves down. However the overall medal count show the depth and width of the US team. They succeed in a wider variety of events than the Chinese. So I"m not sure what reality is distorted.

If it makes you feel better, neither total count nor gold medal count is appropriate. The best would be a point system that awards 3 pts per gold, 2 pts per silver, and 1 pt per bronze. China would lead that system by the way.

  2. The IOC does have a real medal table. This question has been asked a lot. Use the search option please.

  3. Yankees are bad losers.

  4. it's not a big deal to the rest of the world

  5. The real count is better, because its not the quantity its the quality. But both are really good teams either way

  6. Just look at the past Olympics and see how the US media did the rankings.  Now they all of a sudden changed it to total medals?  How obvious is it to mislead its own people.  As an American I am ashamed of this pathetic attempt that would be rediculed by the world.

There is only one real medals race, the one recognized by IOC and everywhere else in the world.  and its not even close.  give credir where its due.  its all about the golds.

  7. If you explain it like: 46 Olympic Champions vs 29 Olympic Champions it kind of makes more sense. Silver and bronze may be medals but they don't earn the title of OC.

  8. Why are so many people obsessed with how the U.S. does their medal table?

    get al life, please

this question is the most over done, over blown nonsense

China will be listed first by the IOC

great for them.......but people will still be asking this question

  9. Here is another wacked out count:

The Chinese have a staggering 23 golds in judged events, exactly half of their regular total. The United States has just four golds in such sports. In total, China has earned 35 medals in sports with judges, while the U.S. has 19.

  10. There is no real or official medal table.

The athletes win the medals -- not the countries. That has always been the position of the IOC. The IOC is governed primarily by ex-athletes and they generally thinks athletes first, then country.

The medal tally is unofficial. You can count them any way you choose. US media is simply counting medals in a way that makes the US look best. China is doing the same.

The IOC does keep track of medals won by country for historical and record keeping purposes and it orders the records by gold medals won. But it does not endorse this methodology

As an aside, the general prediction before the games was China would win the most golds, but the US the most medals. It seems to be playing out that way.

  11. The IOC has no official medal count, I know that Russia and the USA are counting it by Total (the USA has always counted it by total since the start, so did everyone else, till now) and The rest of the world counts it by gold medals so that they could be ahead just like they think that the USA is counting by total so we could be ahead.

The Medal count is media Propaganda, nothing else!

    Dear Titus:

You obviously know nothing about history! LMAO. Almost every country independent today is Independent because they betrayed their mother nation in search for something better, And the USA sure did a great h**l of a job doing it! And as a student and blood carrier of the Native American Culture, I can assure you the Native Americans have forgiven the immigrants and admire the great nation that came to be.

    To Deangelo:

Show me these tables Deangelo. Before the Internet the tables we counted by total. Do the research. All of the Tables done on the internet are by gold because they were RECENTLY DONE!

  12. Nobody gives a $hit.

  13. There is no winner of the Olympics. There is no official Medals table. How many medals does Mexico have bro? So, I think that it is inconsequential to me. I really couldn't care less.

  14. Why are people so obsessed with this?  I guess lazy couch potatoes are more interested in watching a medals table than the sporting events.  God knows they never participated in a sport.

  15. Americans have had their shine (Short 100 years). China, Japan, and the European Union are about to take over as the supreme world power. The burger eating, lies telling, rap singing, overwieght, unworldly Americans are about to give America back to the real Native Americans and be exiled to Mars for betraying their British ancestors.

  16. According to IOC, the countries are listed according to the number of gold won, and then the silver.... Many countries around the world also do it this way.

In USA, however, the medal counts are listed according to the total. I do not believe it is just only for this Olympics. This site listed 2004 olympic medal counts according to the total.

Just pick a method you like and be consistent, gold or total. Or if you like to put a weight on each medal (3,2,1 or 5,3,1, or 4,2,1 or whatever), go ahead and have some fun.

IMO, USA has been and still is a great sports power. Now question about it. China has been improving in recent years. This time China has more gold, and rank #2 in total (as of 8/21/08), very impressive. China is becoming another great sports power. Congratulations to both, and let's just watch the games.

For the medal counts, just do the way you like, and please do not force your way to others. Korea like to factor in the population which makes their medal counts above both US and China - which would make their countryman feel great. Nothing wrong with that.

Here is another site for the medal counts (2004 olympics). You can click on whatever category you like (total, gold, silver...), it will rank the counties accordingly.

  17. didn't you even notice when jamaicans are getting good at sports they don't present it in the media? EG NBC

  18. who cares n e way? GO WORLD!

  19. I think that the medal count has always been based on total medals until this year when the international media is so h**l-bent on making the US look bad that they will do something as petty as saying "Gold medals count more than total medals."

Honestly, it is a weird looking table.  I think it is a reflection on the fact that the Chinese are great at what they are great at, and not too good at much else.  I'm willing to bet that if the US,  Russia, or even Great Britain were hosting and thus had an automatic participant in every event, they would have been able to sneak a few more medals in than China has been able to.

  20. i personally think the medal count should go by total medals instead (i am not american so don't call me a poor loser)

  21. Another loser posting on medal counts

If thats what its all about, only 5 or 6 countries would compete
