What do you think about the surname 'Andreu'? It's pronounced like 'Andrew' and it is a common name in France, Spain (Catalonia) etc.

  2. I think anyone saddled with it who lived in the USA would get recorded wrong. My grandfather Wilken spent half his life saying "That's 'EN', no 'S' on the end", but I find him and his siblings as Wilkens, Wilkin and Wilkins anyway. Andreu with a "u" is going to go down as "Andrew" in a lot of census entries, BMD records and restaurant reservations.

    Why do you ask? Are you inventing a character for your novel or thinking of changing your name to something more distinctive than "Smith", or what?

  3. It is pronounced differently in Germanic languages -

    It would phonetically be  ONT-roy,  or AAHNT-roy, if that helps you to know (with the r "trilled")
