  1. i think the only way people look at any kind of war is that war is definitely a negative thing, in any situation. you may stay out of it or you may get involved in it. in any case you have to see the truth that's right in front of you: gigantic country attacking a neighboring small one which has suffered at its hand for centuries. SEE, HEAR, SAY

  2. The USA had "break away states" in 1861 and insisted it had the right to keep them within the fold. So it had the Civil War.   No one sent in troops to help either side.

Russian has problems with a "break away state" called Chechen and is insisting they stay within the fold. Another internal war.   No one is sending in troops to help either side.

The situation in Georgia is no different. They have one small area called Ossetia that wants to break away and Georgia wants them to remain in the fold. An internal war.   No one should be sending in troops.

The problem is many in that area are "Russian" and Russia feels it has the right to "protect" them. This is the same kind of argument Hitler used when he moved into Czechoslovakia, saying he was protecting Germans.  So Hitler send in troops and now Putin is sending in troops.

This is just Russian trying to grab some land just like the Germans. An attempt to recreate the great "Russian Empire."

Russia is dead wrong on this and needs to butt out.

  3. it is a war that has been planned for a long time, from both sides. russia has been supporting the separatists in a very clever way, issuing south ossetian people russian passports so that it can claim there are now its own citizens to protect there. sending peacekeepers. well, it is ironic to have peacekeepers from the nation the separatists of south ossetia want to actually join.

georgia did a surprisingly stupid thing, attacked south ossetia (and killed a lot of civilian), giving russia an excuse to send in troops. and now russia is pounding georgian cities. I think they should have seen it coming, georgia is a strategic ally of the West, because they have the only oil pipeline that doesnt cross russian or iranian soil. if it had behaved differently it could have enjoyed support from the West, which it cannot have now after such a stupid attack. Georgia can obviously not rely on military support from NATO for actions that are a consequence of its own attack to south ossetia. did georgia get provoked by separatists? sure, but they should have known better than unleashing a surprise attack. this is an irresponsible decisione by their leadership. guess what would have happened if georgia had been granted membership in NATO, as they wanted. We cant afford to have NATO members that get involved in dangerous conflicts so easily.  it should have waited, patiently, strenghten its position with the West, maybe host some NATO bases and then negotiate with separatists from a stronger position. now it is helpless.
