Do you think that music programs in schools should have more money so the music teachers can buy music for their classes?

  1. It is unfortunate that many smaller schools budgets are not big enough to support the music programs. In my area, a way to combat this the schools swap scores for the band.. for instance, my area school buys one full score per year. So do the other neighboring schools. Then every year the schools lend each others scores to the others so everyone has some new material to learn. No one is making illegal copies, just swapping full scores and returning them when the year is out. It helps a little.

  2. I taught music in the public schools from 1971 until this June. My annual budget was LESS than one dollar per student - and one piece of CHORAL music costs about $1.75 - and xeroxing is illegal (most of the time).  My entire budget was less that what was spent to "suit up" ONE kid who was on the third string of the football team, and would almost never PLAY.  We were always the FIRST programs to be cut, and the last to get any money.  Overall, the educational system in the US has most things backwards.  No Child Left Behind is a JOKE - a huge waste of effort and money, while we struggle to meet LOONY requirements - that do nothing to improve the education of our students.  I retired early - as did my husband - because we can do more for the arts from OUTSIDE a school district than inside - we are even forbidden from any political action to improve the system we teach in!

People have NO IDEA what goes on in a school - it is more social services that education in many places.  I like the old t-shirt saying from the Sixties:

Suppose schools got all the money they needed, and the Air Force had to have a bake sale when they wanted a new bomber?

  3. I think so. We have a limited amount of music at my school, and my teacher has to pay for some music from his own pocket.
