  1. My freshman class does a similar experiment using an organic acid.  Some of the issues that arise are...

    Measuring the spill area.

    Assumptions about the shape of the molecules and their orientation.

    These two have to do with calculating the volume of the "spill".  Coupled to molar mass, you can figure out how many molecules you have, BUT you are assuming that the molecules are all neatly alligned the same way (and you know which way that is) and that you can accurately measure the area.  These typically contribute to the final error.
