I think the most idiotic thing to believe is that MMA is a type of self defense, its not self defense, its a sport with fancy kicks and punches and grappling moves, now BJJ and Maui-Tai are good fighting techniques all around and against someone who is unarmed with a weapon or against a single opponent is good, but against someone with a weapon or multiple opponents, its almost useless , in MMA there is weight classes, in real life there is no rules, no weight classes, nothing but you and you r attacker (s), i want to make clear that im talking about self defense and not just plain fighting, I answered a few questions what is the best self defense, I put Krav Maga, i was instantly a thumbs down and the best answer was MMA moves, i think they put this becaseu its so popular now, this bothered me so i posted this question, what do you think? Please no rude remarks, i know millions love MMA, i like it too, i just dont think its a good self defense

  1. In my opinion the best form of self defense is a good pair of running shoes and a cell phone. But in response to your question there are a couple of things that should be defended. in mma you learn the basics first. In BJJ there are a bunch of techniques you learn that you use while that you can not use while your opponent can hit you and in wrestling there are a lot of habits you better not do while when some one is trying to get a hold of something and break it or knee you in the face. in any striking there are some ideologies that fail when a person wants to grapple with you. I think mma is a great way for some one to defend them self. if that is what they want to learn it for. I think most fighters will be able to defend them selves any ways. I personaly think an mma fighter will beat a krav maga guy in a street fight. I did a couple classes(i know a couple classes is not enough) before I ever did mma. One of the things the instructor pointed out was some thing I had already told people. in an adrenaline filled situation you will not be accurate enough to hit a moving  target in the eyes. second if the mma fighter takes it to the ground then he is going to go to mount really quickly. and biting and weapons will do nothing for you there. now if weapons are brought out first my money is on the fighter and any self defence trained person. a thug that wants your money does not know how to use his/her weapon. there was a guy in the IFL that took a a gun away from a would be convienent store robber. didn't need any advanced techniques, heck there are videos of 60 year old lady's doing the same thing. They say that if a person who knows how to use a weapon and wants to kill you, you will never even see the weapon and you die from getting stabbed in the back or shot from to far away to react. do I believe krav is awesome, yes. do I think that it is the best, no. Do I think anything is the best, no. all it oils down to is knowledge and if you practice the application corectly. I would not give some one a thumbs down for siting any art that they believe will work for them. All martial arts have been used and used to defend to some one in todays society. in my oppinion they all CAN work they just have to know how to use it

  2. I have taken several different styles in my 61 years. I have fought all styles or most. I say, there is no best style. The best individul fighter is paramount, not his style.

  3. Well I'm not saying Krav Maga isn't good, but I think it is way overhyped, basically because the style was shown on a couple TV shows.

  4. i agree MMA isnt self defence it is just training to fight. most situations where people think they have to fight they could have proably talked their way out of it or just run away. i also think a lot of people on here dont do any martial arts they just watch UFC and other videos and think they know all about martial arts.

krav maga might be the most street orientated and posibly the best defensive martial art but i still wouldnt call it the best self defence because really unless you really feel threatened you shouldnt try to hurt your attacker to much you should just try to escape.

  5. So you think Krav Maga is above all? A fighting style you don't really see people use in most major MMA tournaments? I know Krav Maga and the other styles you mentioned, but do you on the other hand know much about any other styles besides Krav Maga? Making conjectures like that are considered pretty rude when those fighting styles has been popularly taught in the military and being used in MMA tournaments and has been proving to be one of the most successful style.

  6. In today's environment, the average person living an average life is  better served learning environmental, sociological and psychological aspects of self defense -- this will effectively keep them away from most of the scenarios that would allow them to be attacked since common sense will keep them away from vulnerable situations such as walking down a dark alley alone, or going to the wrong part of town at the wrong time.

Whether you grapple or strike a man with a gun, you are getting shot regardless if you do krav maga or bjj. There is no end-all, be-all style that will save your life.

If you think any one style is best for facing multiple attackers or someone with a gun pointed at you, you are severely mistaken.

If you live a lifestyle that makes people want to plan to attack you, well then you better pack heavy metal because no art will save you when someone is that intent on harming you.

Keep in mind that it is very difficult to train for the most EXTREME cases of self defense where multiple people with weapons are trying to harm - if this is the case, then you are simply living your life wrong (unless you work for security).

The reason why people are drawn towards modern MMA styles such as BJJ/Muay Thai is because these styles are trained realistically, and are proven to hold up under unarmed combat day in, day out. Does it accurately dipict a self defense scenario? No, but it is one of the closest things you can get since the training is alive and realistic.

This said, in the most common self defense scnario, you will be much better off knowing how to FIGHT in general, than knowing self defense techniques that you did not train realistically.
