  1. The same thing that caused the earthquake in 2004 in Sumatra, and the same thing that caused the earthquake in 2001 in Nisqually WA, and the same thing that caused the earthquake in 1994 in Northridge CA. All earthquakes are caused by the build-up and release of tectonic forces within the crust of the earth. Though it's still technically a theory, almost all earth scientists today agree that convection from the earth's mantle is literally causing "currents" that are driving the crustal tectonic plates into each other. This interaction between the various plates (known as "plate tectonics") is what causes earthquakes throughout the world, whether in China or California.

  2. The same thing that causes all the other earthquakes in China and California.  The movement of the material in the mantal and of the earth's tectonic plates.

  3. Plate Tectonics like all the others; sometimes the earth's plates move alongside one another and this causes earthquakes.

  4. the huge amount of chinese and mexican food eaten in both places.
