Question:

What do you think could be wrong with my Internet connection?

Just a couple of days ago my Internet connection got slower for some reason. But this is only on my computer, if I play on my Xbox 360 Live it works fine, the connection is fast. Here on my computer it got slower for some reason and then when I open my homepage to Yahoo it doesn't even load it so I have to go some where else but it's still slow. Right now on Yahoo! Answers it's slow, everything takes a while to show up or even when I press the "Submit" button to give an answer it takes a long time to post. When I open my homepape for Yahoo, in the bottom left it says, "Website found...waiting for reply" but it never loads.

(I know that my computer doesn't have a virus since I already did a scan and I have Norton 360)

What do you think could be wrong?

  1. Okay, do as follows.

    1. Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools, Options, and delete your cookies, files and history.

    2. Run an Adware/Spyware scan if you can.

    3. Defragment your hard drive.

    4. Restart the computer.

If that stuff doesn't fix it, then it may be a problem with your DNS server.  You can switch to Open DNS or see if your DSL provider can provide you with an alternate DNS server.

  2. It's not your internet connection, but your computer.  You need to empty out the cache and cookies.

Go to Windows Explorer (RIGHT click on the start icon and click explore).

    - Click on the Windows folder

    - Click on the Temp folder

    - Click on the Temporary Internet Files folder

    - Now with this file open, go up top to the menu and choose "Edit," "Select All."

    - Once all the files are highlighted (in blue), press the "Delete" button on your keyboard.

Most files will delete, but some will stay because they are associated with a "Cookie."

This is usually enough to help your system with it's performance (esp. since you said you already ran a virus scan), but if it's not, you will need to do the same thing with "Cookies."  That folder is in this same section, but be prepared...  If you have passwords saved on your computer, deleting your cookies means you will have to re-enter those passwords next time you visit the site.  Also, if you delete cookies, be sure to go back and do the delete process with Temporary Internet Files again, as the associated cookies will allow them to be deleted this time.

Also, you should occasionally do some system maintenance like de-fragging your hard drive.

    - Go to your desktop (no programs open on your screen)

    - Open (double click) "My Computer" (usually the first icon)

    - Click on "Control Panel"

    - Double click on "Administrative Tools" (note:  this will likely not work if you are on a work computer because you won't have administrative privileges).

    - Double click on "Computer Management"

    - Below the "Storage" folder, choose "Disk Defragmenter" and tell it to defragment the "C" drive (do this AFTER you've done the above to clean up the hard drive."

A defragmenter re-arranges all your files to put them in places where the processer can access them most efficiently.  Just know that this process takes a while (about 10 - 20 mins. on most modern computers, but it depends on the size of the drive) so don't start it until you have time.

Finally, if you are still having trouble after this (which is unlikely), then you may have a bad RAM chip.  No big deal... things do occasionally break.  RAM is easy to access on most computers and pretty cheap to buy.  If you don't know what kind you have (yep, there are different kinds) or how to change it yourself, some place like Best Buy can help.

One last note:  If this seems like a lot, it's really not (+ it's easy).  Just print out these instructions to follow as you go along.  I hope it helps!

  3. i deleted all my download some weird pictures and some of website that i don't go on any more

  4. Turn off your DSL modem and turn it back on again. Try restarting your computer too.

  5. I have DSL also and we have gotten slower as well if you find the cure let me know

  6. Try cleaning out your cookies and temporary internet files, if that doesn't work try de-fragmenting it, if that doesn't work try checking it for adware/spyware if you have that checker. Then run another full system scan with your virus protector. After that I don't know.

  7. Two things

    - if you have a router, try configuring it and opening up the ports (redirecting) for your computer

    - if you have a firewall try turning it offff

  8. what internet do you have if you have dailup lol that sucks but if its just slower call your provider
