what do you people think a good first car is for a 17 year old?

A 6 cylinder engine/vehicle like a Mustang.

if you want a car that will last you through college get one thats dependable and a good price, but if you are looking for one to last you through high school get a 4 or 6 cyl. sedan or coupe, go for an STI

STI 06  or limited STi. Don't get mustang unless it an 04 cobra, Skyline Gtr R33 or r32 Supra TT, Bmw M3, VW R32, EVo MR, Audi S4, Lotus elsie (they drop in price), G37, G35, Boxster 986.

If you are in snowy areas though, you probably will have a hard time with it in the winter. If I were you though, Id go fo the GT

Pick a small,simple, and uncomplicated car. Don't distract yourself with something loaded with frills. A four cylinder car with automatic trans.will be plenty for a new driver to handle.
