Idk, maybe a feeling of being in control. Like maybe they feel that they have no real control over their own life. Maybe they felt that they were never important, or that no one listened to what they had to say. Maybe it is killing the hurt they feel inside. Idk, it's hard to say. Maybe they are thinking, now who's in control, now people will hear me, now I'm important and clever.

If it's a sociopath doing the killing, he is likely thinking of an errand he is supposed to run, what he is going to have for dinner, whether he has clean clothes in his closet or something like that. Sociopaths are emotionally stunted and feel no guilt over anything at all.

I think they always find a way to justify the murder and think about how much THEY were hurt by the victim. I think that with exception of professional killers, all people manage to twist the reality in the most convenient for them way. So I guess what a murderer thinks is "You've hurt me so much, you were so unjust, now take this!" Yes, I think what they think about is themselves and their own emotions, and how good and right they are :)
