My dog, my best friend, died september 1st of this year.

My Mom came home and said she was in the back yard and wasn't moving and she was hardly breathing, they rushed to the hospital and my sister tried doing CPR but by the time she reached the hospital she was lifeless. We can't afford an autopsy but I was wondering if anyone will have an idea of what happened.

My Mom says she was eating much and that when she went outside her stomach looked like there was a big ball in it? Her breathing lessened and lessened until she was lifeless.

Does anybody have an idea? Thanks.

  1. It could have been a bowel obstruction.  That happen if your dog swallows something that becomes lodged in the bowel, thus blocking anything from getting out.  It can also happen if you dog gets infected with worms and isn't treated; the worms can get tangled together and form an obstruction.  Once the bowel is obstructed the stomach becomes distended and the dog stops eating.  This condition can also cause vomiting as if/when the dog does try to eat or drink after the bowel is obstructed, there is nowhere for it to go.  I am sorry for your loss.

  2. Maybe a tumor-why don't you call the hospital and ask them what the Dr.'s opinion is?? I am so sorry about your loss. My family still talks about our "Miss Honey" from years ago. You may want to consider "fostering" for a rescue organization or volunteer at a local animal shelter.

  3. Did you have any problems with the neighbors and your dog? If so then they may of gave it (I WONT MENTION THE NAME FOR PEOPLE THAT DONT KNOW SO THEY WONT TRY IT) a poisonous drink.

  4. i'm so sorry you have to go thru this loss. losing a friend at all is hard enough, but one so suddenly makes it that much worse.

you don't mention how old your dog was, and this doesn't give much description to base anything on. there is always the possibility of bloat, given her belly being swollen, but most vets know that when they see it and i'd have thought they'd have mention that at the time.

but it makes me wonder if she had something like a cancer which burst inside. it could cause internal problems like swelling of the abdomen, breathing difficulties (esp if the lungs space is compromised), being comatose or in a mentally depressed state.  one of my ferrets had this happen, and it was a pretty quick passing. we never knew she was ill until the day the tumor got so big it burst. i think she was comatose pretty quickly after it happened, so at least i can rest assured she didn't suffer much.

in the meantime, do what you can for yourself to help get thru this. get a journal and write letters to your girl...tell her your feelings and what you loved most about her...pour it out when you need to, and you may find being able to say whatever you want helps you to feel better. doing a scrapbook might help too...going thru pictures and writing down funny or fond memories is very therapeutic...perhaps your mom & sister would like to help with that?  also, when i lose a pet, i make a cement garden stone to put out back. you can get these any most craft stores and decorate them with your pet's name, dates, dog tag, river rocks, glass rocks, whatever you like. it helps me to have a place to go when i'm sad about them, a place to sit and remember them.

peace to you and your family.

    SOMETHING'S MISSING

    There comes a day

    when you wake up

    and something is missing.

You get up and go into the kitchen,

her food and water dish still sits there,

you look to the wall by the door,

her leash is still hanging there,

you walk over to it and notice her collar hanging there too,

you slowly reach out and touch it,

    painfully remembering the beautiful friend

    who used to wear it,

as tears come to your eyes,

you lower your hand and look out the window,

you still feel something else is missing.

You walk back into the kitchen

    and prepare the morning coffee,

while waiting, you gaze out the window

at all the birds having breakfast

at the feeders you lovingly built for them,

she used to love to chase after the birds in their morning meal,

tears start to fall as you turn away to get some fresh coffee,

but there is something else missing.

You go to sit at the table

    with a favorite magazine,

    time goes by fast

as you start your second cup of coffee

you decide to step outside in the warm spring air.

As you stand on the porch

you catch a movement from the corner of your eye,

    there is nothing there.

    Suddenly, just like old times

all the birds at the feeders scatter about and fly away,

    as if something startled them,

you feel a smile coming to your face,

    a smile!

"I know that was you" you say outloud.

You remember her with a smile and a warm heart,

suddenly you realize what is missing,

    that terrifying feeling of hopelessness,

the feeling of being lost, the feeling like you cant go on, whats the use.

    That feeling is missing,

and as you wonder how that came to be,

you notice the settled birds suddendly scatter again.

That is how it came to be,

you are still right here with me
