Either German killed them both, or, killed the man for a sum of money for the woman.  

Everything that points to her being alive (postcards, cats retreival, social security/loan references) means either she is actually alive, or, the German is using her identity fraudulantly.  Or has sold off her details etc.

What I want to know is why the mother is described as 'overbearing' and who got the money from the house sale - and whether any of their other assets were touched during the 9 years.

We can only speculate, but it does look likely the German guy had something to do with it.  

There's no Rockerfeller connection though, apart from a dodgy German using that as one of his many aliases.
