The rifle will be used mostly for brush hunting at typical ranges within 100 yards. The choices are The Weatherby Vanguard Sporter and The Savage Model 114 American Classic.

  2. i agree with anthony r.. those weapons would be good for anything youd hunt in north america! 30-06 is hard to beat as a general all around ammo!

  3. well a marlin 336c in 35 remington is the big bro to the 30/30 and it is a powerhouse but if you feel the need for a larger gun i know it sounds crazy but the 450 marlin is an excellent choice because they make lighter less powerful ammo for deer and antelope and slightly larger for black bear and cougar and then on for elk and brown bear and moose upwards

  4. The rifle itself is an extension of our ego and ability to spend money.

Either firearm you mentioned is more than adequate for the chore you stated.

As for me... Any quality rifle ...in a caliber I shoot well that has enough delivered energy to kill the game is good enough for me. Make, model and style is preference.

I own a lot of nice guns... my "shooter" is a old Winchester .30-30 that looks like it lived in a saddle scabbard for 60 years...it still does!

    Substance over style!

  5. What calibers, what are you hunting, and what are you willing to spend? The weatherby will be alot more expensive.

  6. Weatherby in 30-06 caliber because you have a greater variety of bullet weights to choose from.* It will harvest any Big Game in North America cleanly and effectively.*

  7. For brush hunting you want a short barreled rifle because it will be easier to carry. You are going to need to spend extra money to buy a scope for those bolt action rifles since they lack iron sights. For 100 yd shooting you should be able to hit with just iron sights. In dense woods, the fragile scope could be struck by a branch, and could lose zero if the rifle is accidentally dropped, not to mention moisture, and ice which can form on the lens.

The 308 and 30-06 are vastly overpowered for 100 yd shooting. The aerodynamic bullets of the 30-06 and 308 are designed for efficiency at long range, but expansion will not be as good as a flat point bullet.

A 308/30-06 will damage a lot more meat at less than 100 yds than a 30-30 will. They will be hitting about 300-400 feet per second faster at that range than a 30-30, and may actually penetrate less if the bullet opens up too quickly.

30-30 lever is ideal for short range shooting. Lower recoil, flat point bullets and short barrels make it an ideal short range hunting tool.

A 336 marlin is just slightly over 3 feet long, making it very handy in a brush setting.

An advantage to the 336 design is that you can load the rifle on the fly, just pop in a round in the loading gate and refill the tube magazine.

Tube magazines are great because there is no chance of losing your ammo. Other magazine designs, you risk dumping the ammo when you hit the mag release button.

  8. You are comparing a top of the line Savage with a fancy wood stock to a bottom of the line Weatherby that's actually made by Howa.

Now, this doesn't mean that either one of the rifles will shoot better, it's just the economics of their production and the quality and labor that goes into the fancy wood. I think either is a fine rifle.

I'd be just as happy with a Savage synthetic stock Hunter class rifle with some good glass up top.

  9. I'd take a Remington 700, Ruger 77 or Winchester 70 over either of your choices, and theyr'e all about the same price, and by the way, get a .30-06 not a .308.

  10. A savage 30-06 best round ever made and will take any big game animal in North America.

  11. For medium range hunting, I'd want nothing better than my old Browning BLR in .358 Winchester.  My BLR is the most accurate rifle I've ever owned and one of the most accurate I've ever had the privilege of shooting.

  12. Brush gun? ---- Why not consider a lever gun chambered in 30/30?  They make excellent brush guns....

What exactly do you want to hunt?

  13. Either of your choices in .30-06 caliber.  The reason so many people favor the .30-06 is because it is a reliable, jack-of-all-trades.  The over-the-counter ammo selection is incredible and easily available, even in the most remote areas.  You just can't go wrong with that caliber.

  14. Marlin 336 30/30 with iron sites

Assuming we are talking about deer hunting
